CANON EOS 750D v NIKON D5600

Good evening everyone.

I am seriously thinking about taking the plunge and moving on to my first DSLR ... I have done the Digital Compact Camera`s and my current mount is the Panasonic Lumix FZ330 Bridge Camera, which I have to say as given me a lot of pleasure and some very nice photo`s.

But the electronic view finder, I find a little bit awkward sometimes and the camera is not that easy to use on fast moving objects... also I find it really does need the very best light on the subject in order to get the very best from it.

So that brings me nicely on to my request and your opinion on the following two cameras that I have been looking at recently... so CANON v NIKON....

CANON EOS750D with 18mm - 55mm lens and a 70mm - 300mm.

NIKON D5600 with 18mm - 55mm and a 70mm -- 300mm lens both are NIKON lenses and both are VR

As I am moving in to the world of Digital SLR photography...I am what you may describe as a newbie but I would very much like to hear what your opinions are of these two camera`s and which of the two you think is the best one.

Please don`t hold back... good or bad... your comments will be very much appreciated and may help me in my decision on which way to go and to also help me understand more about the the DSLR camera and photography.

I can't talk about the Canon but if you do end up preferring the Nikon D5600 then you could look at the D5500 which seems to be the same camera without Blue tooth and is therefore cheaper. Next if you like the Nikon D5500 then the older Nikon D5300 is nearly the same spec as the D5500/D5600 but without the Touch screen and much cheaper still!

I was thinking of buying a Nikon D7100 but there are good second hand D5300 around for a fraction of the price that do the same job. ( I probably will buy a D7100 to get the better low light auto focus - I just wanted someone to tell me what to do )

The Nikons have more focus points than the Canon equivalents but the Canon has more of the cross type focus points ( which can handle vertical lines)

By the way I like most on here believe it is essential to buy the best glass you can afford - I own a Nikkor 70-200 F2.8 VRII second hand cost £600 I think it was !!

To a degree you have to ignore the Canon vs Nikon debate and go with the one that feels right. I went from Pentax film to canon Digital and have worked up from the 350D to the 750D. 750D is a cracking bit of kit, borrows the focusing system from one of its more expensive cousins and I find it easy to use. I would have bought a second one but for a cracking Black Friday deal which netted me the newer 800D for less than a 750D on the day! 800D also has upgraded focusing system.

Only downside I found with the 750D is that there are no 3rd party batteries for it so a second one is going to be a Canon brand.

As to lenses, most of the Canon ones get good reviews now. The L series are the Rolls Royce versions but you will pay for them. If this is your first DSLR kit then you can't go far wrong with the basic lens and look to upgrade when you are more comfortable with using the camera. We all look at some pictures and wish we had a better lens although usually you just need a better photographer

Don't ignore software, most images will benefit from some sort of editing, some will be provided with the camera but as you become more proficient there will be other options out there.

Strange as Amazon show several. I'm not a 750D owner but I just went to Amazon and typed in "LP-E17" and voila!

Another important consideration is how the camera physically feels in the hand. With the two you mention above there isn’t actually much between the two in terms of technology(Nikon edges it), but get yourself to a shop and get hands on with both. It might also be worth considering a higher spec camera if money allows, as I’ve noticed quite a few people buy in at entry level only to upgrade within two years.

Just quickly Googled 3rd party LP-E17 and it appears that there are still issues with some of them. Some do not display the battery life, some overheat in the camera, some won't work with the battery grip! Caveat Emptor

Hello Tiger 1 .
I have a Canon 750D and its a great camera, giving 24.2mp, I upgraded from a Canon 450 D at 12.1mp about 2 years ago. There are lots more things I could do with the camera but I tend to be a bit lazy with it and have it in auto mode a lot of the time. I stuck with Canon because I already had a bit of a Canon lens collection going on.Have also had Sigma and Tamron lens's on it which are pin sharp. I recommend the 55-250 IS STM EF-S lens which is an HD lens. Not as long as the 300mm you mentions , but , if you buy a kenko 1.4 x HD DGX converter it will give you the extended focal length on a whole host of lenses.
As for the Nikon, I don't think you can go wrong with that decision either. My personal opinion is that Nikon have very good quality lenses throughout the range and maybe offer a higher quality glass from the lower price brackets upwards. As you get to the top end then there is nothing in it really.
I have a Nikon bridge camera which I use as back up and static/ museum shots. Thats a 16mp, I can't fault it, other than it has an electronic view finder where I prefer an eye piece. Other then that, I don't think you are going to be disappointed with either choice of DSLR. I wish you well with whatever you choose and hope that you will let us all know what you went with in the end.

As many have said the specs are pretty much the same.

Best bet is to get into a shop & feel which is more comfortable for you.

Just confirming that you need to see how comfortable it is for you.

When I bought my first DSLR, it was between the Canon 550D and whatever Nikon was equivalent at the time (can't remember).

Went to a shop (John Lewis), held them both, pressed buttons, looked at changing settings.
The Canon felt more 'right' than the Nikon, so I went for the 550D with 18-55 STM

I've now got an 80D (cracking camera!) with stock 18-135 USM and a 70-300 USM.

Much appreciate your help... Iwill be in the shops on Thursday for a few dry runs with both cameras.

Thinking of going with the Nikon at the moment but like you say, that could all change once I have handled them both.

Have a good look at the Sony range, they are way ahead in the technology stakes, canon and nikon are a few years behind in the mirrorless game, canon have only just released it's 1st mirrorless body.
Nikon are using the Sony system but slightly crippled version.
If you want a good fully loaded system with all the trimmings and more, Sony is the way.

I upgraded to the 750D about a year ago. I have had no problem with battery life, so far, and am happy with the "feel" of the body.
An important consideration is what you are shooting and from where: if 90% of your shots are on the ramp, stick with your existing kit, maybe with a better lens.
If most of what you shoot is "over the fence", then you need a quality 400mm, either new, or as in my case, a 2nd hand EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM -I think at least 1/2 your budget should be on the glass.

At the end of the day they are both just tools for taking pictures, brands does not make much of a difference, it's you that makes the real difference.

In saying that the VR on the Nikon lenses is a slight edge over the Canon.

Just buy a camera, make mistakes and learn from them and remember your first 10,000 pictures are your worst!
