Had a brilliant lecture with OC 617 Sqn last night. Explained about the lack of flying etc. Also explained about how training has changed on F-35, why they don't fly close formations for example. Also how it could be potentially bad news for the Mach Loop Mafia

I think at the very least due to the significant increase in synthetic training as a proportion of the overall need (simulators) there'll be less actual flying.

Looks like the hobby is going get rather boring in that case.

Unfortunately, modern military has been on a steady downward trend for years. I hoped for a long time that Classic Jets would fill the gap, but after Shoreham - that seems to have finished too.

It's a sad time - the F-35 really does signify the end of an era.

How does an decrease in physical flying in favour of increased simulator time equate to a downward trend?

The job of the military is to be able to defend the country if required - and in a financially sustainable way - not to provide us with peace time entertainment.

As in the view of an aircraft enthusiast. A view I share and all those who can come off of their high horse every once in a while does too!

I'm referring to a downward trend from the point of view of an enthusiast.

To be fair though (armchair expert alert) I am genuinely concerned about the way our armed forces are going. It seems the MOD have chosen a tiny number of PR golden gooses in rather than a larger, more adaptable, conventional force.
