Spitfire VS Tucano
Hi
Just wondering, how would a later MK Spitfire fair against a modern RAF Tucano in a mock dog fight? Forgetting about weapons because i think the RAF versions have none, but in terms of getting in the best position to theoretically use just guns, would they even be a match for each other or are they in completely different leagues?

Have you tried Googling' Spitfire v Tucano dogfight'. Came up with 49,600 results in 0.44 seconds.

I like Spitfires, I like Tucanos, I wonder which is best?
There's only one way to find out.

In this world there's two kinds of people, my friend. Those with loaded guns, and those who dig. You dig.

Never heard anyone ever ask that before. Interesting question Hernaman86
I'd like to think that the Spitfire would pee all over it - but that could just be wishful thinking on my part!

School's out.
Re: Spitfire VS Tucano
Nice idea!
For a start the Tucano has marginally wider nominal g range, +6 / -3 versus +5.33 for the Spitfire. Plus it has much better power curve up to altitude and far more responsive to throttle.
Will have to sit down with the books and think about this one!
Any of the BBMF pilots still current on Tucanos? That would be an interesting interviee question.

Re: Spitfire VS Tucano
Got about 200 hours in one of them…..Unfortunately not the Spitfire…..The Tucano has near instant throttle response, though without auto-rudder it does lead to some "interesting" torque effects at low speed. Given it has, broadly, the same power/weight ratio as a Hurricane (Tac approx 3250kg/1150Hp plays 3900kg/1200Hp for the Hurri) but with more modern aerodynamics and construction, my guess would be that it sits between the Spit and Hurri in terms of Air Combat ability. Ultimately a couple of things come into play. Firstly, as with all air combat, pilot skill/starting position/first tally are disproportionately important. Secondly, a true "trial" now would be hard given the use of low octane fuels and the, probable, reluctance of the Spitfire owner to let it go "fangs out" against the Tac. I would suggest that the Spitfire would have significantly better pitch capability (elevator) but that wing may well bleed energy quicker than the Tuc, which will have more instant power, a similar roll rate, plus more fuel (lots) and easier controls (one power lever rather than Throttle/Mixture/Prop) the potential for a second set of eyes and, in the last resort, an airbrake to prevent overshoot……..

If you mean a T1 Tucano, it has no armament.

And it also said "mock dogfight"!
Re: Spitfire VS Tucano
Many thanks 'Evalu8ter' nice to hear from other than 'armchair pilots'. No offence to them, not meant to be derogatory, am one myself, but didn't used to be.
Re: Spitfire VS Tucano
Please can somebody produce a picture of an RAF Tucano 'mixing-it' with a Spitfire Mk19+ to assist those that can't be arsed to read this thread?
Perhaps some of you flight-sim addicts could produce virtual footage of an un-armed Spitfire-vs-RAF Tucano, as there aren't any Spitfire jockeys joining this debate yet. Although if you have a Spit' to fly, why would you care about a Tucano?

I was just purely wondering, if you don't care or don't see the point in the question then don't read it lol, no one is forcing you
Just intrigued to know how a modern designed fast prob with modern avionics and engineering would have feared against the spit, thanks for some of the answers guys, sounds like they may still be an even match. would like to see how they would fair in a climb against each other.

Re: Spitfire VS Tucano
Why specifically a Mk19? It only specifies "a later make" if you read it correctly.

Re: Spitfire VS Tucano
Depending on source, the Spit 14 (Griffon engine) has a max speed of 450mph, and a 4700 ft/min climb rate, compared to 315 mph and 3500 ft/min for the Tucano. I don't think the Tuc would survive long enough to get into a turning fight....
Re: Spitfire VS Tucano
& being the star you are, that's a hat-trick of reading gaffs from you my partially sighted friend! I wrote Mk 19+, indicating 19 plus, being a Minimum of Mk19 but preferably more than a Mk 19
I see the unarmed PR19 being more than a match for the unarmed Tucano. Later Spitfire marks would cane it!
