Saw news of this today. Loved the old show and don't know how it could be bettered. What do you think?

Mixed feelings really. Wonderful that someone thinks that such a gentle, old fashioned British comedy is still relevant but I do wonder if they can pull it off successfully. Old favourites are hard to replicate on the big screen (I think it is intended for cinema), even more so when Arthur Lowe, Clive Dunn etal are burnt into the consciousness of every Dad's Army fan.

A brave move if it happens, and I would love it to work.

Not looking forward to this at all.
I bought the box set for my folks a few years back then watched them myself and just laughed and laughed.
Outstanding British comedy not to be messed with IMHO!

Still unsure about how this will go but the producers are not stinting on the new cast - Toby Jones, Michael Gambon, Tom Courtney, Bill Paterson, Bill Nighy, Catherine Zeta Jones, Sarah Lancashire etal..

Couldn't use pub back room, was it The Angel, if Dads Army filming inside. Couldn't drive through Stanta if Dads Army were filming outside - could though if it was just Army or RAF. Can't get near the excitement today.

Don't think a remake will appeal to me - still enjoying the repeats they are showing.

Absolutely not. I can't understand the mentality of the people who want re-makes of things. Clive Dunn made his character his own - as did Arthur Lowe and many of the other cast members - you cannot replicate that - it would just look like a Carry On film.

Casting looks excellent, but I will hold my breath to see if they can recreate the magic of the original.

As said above, I really hope it works, but I just can't see it myself, the original actors made the characters their own. People of a certain age will inevitably compare it to the original, looking back with nostalgia means the new cast will have their work cut out. For those too young to be really familiar with the TV series there'll be no legacy to refer to, which again means it'll need to be really good to appeal to a fresh audience, with the characters standing out without reference to the past.

Regardless of the cast it could never be as good as the original which is classic British comedy . Its a brave idea perhaps but doomed , I say doomed and a totally unnecessary remake which will never work you stupid boy !

Apart from watching repeats of the originals on BBC2 on Saturday evenings, I today made a sound investment in a local charity shop - Dads Army videos @ £0.25 each or 5 for a £.

Needless to say, I bought all five, and this will give me as many as 15 progs to watch in quiet moments.

I imagine that they will only appreciate in value as time passes !

I saw the theatre play a few years ago and it was saved with Lesley Grantham (dirty Den) playing Private Walker.
Not a patch on the TV shows though.

Nothing but the original will do , remakes are never the same . They don't like it up 'em you know !
