This morning I saw a heartwarming event which highlights there are some people in the world worth knowing...
I was in a queue at Butchers shop and a dear old lady, very much a pensioner in front of me asked for a very small cut of meat to be cut further into two so she could have two meals.
I watched as the butcher took a larger joint at the side and cut three thick slices off, which he quickly popped into 3 separate bags. When the lady emptied her purse on the glass counter there was a mass of copper and a little silver, along with a £5 note. The Butcher took a small amount of silver and placed it in the till, and extracted a £10 note from the till, giving it to the lady and said it was her change.
I was lost for words, eventually when I was served, I said that was a lovely thing I had seen him do. He replied that he was very fortunate to be in a position to help, and that in better times, the lady had been a valued customer. I realised he had done something so simple, but so effective.

I sincerely hope nobody sees or states any negative in this (she does it every week, it's probably his mother etc); it went a long way to dispell some recent theories of selfish, arrogant and 'greater than thou' people that this nation is keen to display and promote...

What a Lovely thing to do for a loyal customer, and, to an old lady at that. I am pleased to see that some Old values of been nice and helpful is still surviving in these times.

There is always room for random acts of kindness in the world. Wouldn't it be great if everyone did just one.............

What an excellent story of human kindness, thinking about it, I don't think I've ever met a miserable butcher, they always seem to be cheery fellows.

Back in `79 I used to work in a slaughterhouse as a meat boner and we used to have an old guy who came in for bones for his dog. I used to leave loads of meat on them and Ste the old guy used to single me out as he knew i would. One day i got caught by Reg the supervisor and got a right rollocking as the bones were supposed to be white but every chance I got I would leave loads on. I was invited to Stes` house one time and went with my ex-wife and he gave us some wonderful meat pie which I presume came from the scraps on the bones. Told us he used to be an infantryman in WW2 and how he lost his son when he was only 4. This post has brought back a lot of memories and shows we don`t know the stories behind people.Never did see his dog though. Always wondered what happened to him as I took my HGV licence and moved on and lost touch.Neil

I recall many years ago as a young Boy Scout going to do some work on an old ladies garden for 'Bob A Job Week' (remember that..?) Her husband had kept it beautiful for years but had died some months before and it was becoming overgrown and a right old mess. Six of us worked for a whole week putting it back into the condition it used to be and she was really pleased. She wanted to pay us 'the going rate' for the work but we insisted that she only give us 'a bob'.

Also for the next couple of years we all took it in turns when we had spare time to go in and keep it all looking nice. Again she wanted to pay us but we told her that she had paid 'up front' and the bob would take care of it. We looked after it until she had to go into a home and even then a couple of the lads would visit her, take her plants and tend her window box and patio area for some years until she passed away.

We were all just pleased we could help her in the way we did.

Our window cleaner is a decent bloke. On the end of our row of houses lives a lovely elderly lady. We all have her interests at heart as she always stops to talk as she goes by or we offer her a lift somewhere if we pass in the car. She was robbed a few months ago (spineless gits in my opinion) and was without cash when he did the windows. He returned at the agreed time where she handed him 40 pence and a boiled sweet. He told me what happened with a grin on his face and said she had been upset with the robbery and couldn't bring himself to tell her she was short. He said it would be easier if he did them for free from now on cos she is so sweet. If he is then he gets a really decent bonus from me at Christmas. Pay it forward.
