Post by GOOSE » Mon Dec 21, 2009 3:49 pm

It is with sadness that the Ministry of Defence must confirm that a soldier from The Royal Military Police was killed in Afghanistan yesterday, Sunday 20 December 2009.

The soldier was killed as a result of small arms fire that happened in the Sangin area, in central Helmand Province, during the evening of 20 December 2009.

Spokesman for Task Force Helmand, Lieutenant Colonel David Wakefield, said:

"It is my sad duty to inform you that a soldier from The Royal Military Police was shot and killed last night in the Sangin area of Helmand Province. A Royal Military Policeman who died in the line of his duty, and who we will remember."

Just a couple weeks ago my wife lost a good friend who was also a Redcap. They were both in Air Cadets, she was devastated at the news. Sergeant Robert David Loughran-Dickson, 33 from Deal, Kent. 4th Regiment, Royal Military Police, died 18/11/09. Too many of our lads and ladies are losing thier lives, i only hope this ends soon.
Rest in peace, your nations pride carries you.

A nice sentiment to Sergeant Loughran-Dickson there Gary.

Some sad news re our recent brave Military Policeman, from the Sun -

A BRITISH soldier shot dead in Afghanistan may have been a victim of friendly fire.
The death of the member of the Royal Military Police took the British death toll in Afghanistan this year to 104.
An MoD spokesman said: "There is a possibility that the latest death in Afghanistan was caused as a result of friendly fire.
"The incident is being investigated but no firm conclusion will be reached until after the coroner's inquest."
The serviceman was killed by small arms fire in the Sangin area of Helmand Province, southern Afghanistan.
His family has been informed.

Lt Col David Wakefield, spokesman for Task Force Helmand, said: "It is my sad duty to inform you that a soldier from the Royal Military Police was shot and killed on Sunday night in the Sangin area of Helmand Province.
"A Royal Military Policeman who died in the line of
his duty, and who we will remember."
The shooting happened on the eve of Gordon Brown speaking on British Forces radio and insisting he had "absolutely no doubt" Britain was pursuing the right strategy in Afghanistan.
He said: "The very presence of our forces in Afghanistan, taking on the Taliban and preventing the return of al-Qaeda, has a direct link to the safety and security of people in our streets.
"If you are trying to deal with a terrorist threat that operates from Pakistan and has links to Afghanistan, you have got to deal with it where the epicentre of global terrorism is. So I think we have made the right decisions all along on this.
"We have been in Afghanistan longer than the Second World War, longer than the First World War, so this is a difficult enterprise, it has taken a long time, but we have a strategy."
Defence Secretary Bob Ainsworth pledged yesterday that the international military coalition in Afghanistan would "take the battle to the enemy" in 2010.
He said: "There will be operations in the New Year. We can't guarantee people their loved ones are going to be safe.
"But we have invested massively - and will continue to do so - in providing them with all the kit and equipment they need to keep them as safe as we can and enable them to do the job that we ask them to do."

It is with great sadness that the Ministry of Defence must confirm that Lance Corporal Michael David Pritchard of the 4th Regiment, Royal Military Police, was killed in Afghanistan on 20 December 2009.

He was killed as a result of small arms fire in the Sangin area, in central Helmand Province.

The possibility that he died as a result of friendly fire is being investigated in Afghanistan but no firm conclusion will be reached until the coroner's inquest.
