Winter Fuel Allowance goes west! Winter fuel Allowance scrapped for Pensioners not on benefits

Chancellor Rachel Reeves says winter fuel payments will now be restricted to those on pension credits or other means-tested benefits

Flipping cheek if you ask me - effectively reducing the Pension

A right kick in the teeth for those pensioners that have worked hard all of their working lives, have savings and have their own house and not on benefits of any kind.

And then there's those that have been on benefits for most of their lives with no interest in working, no savings, council house, still on all sorts of benefits after retirement age - they get rewarded with the full amount.

Utterly disgraceful.

That's why those types don't work as they're better off not doing so. Sticking up two fingers to the decent folk and the system. Infuriating to say the least!

First act of a Labour government, steal 300 quid off the pensioners to pay the doctors 22% pay rise. No doubt the doctors will want another pay rise in the winter because they are overloaded with old people suffering from hypothermia.

Still, most pensioners didn't vote labour, so no harm done.

It's a real shame and I think the government will be remembered for this move.

I know the Winter Fuel allowance had critics i.e the wealthy pensioners also were entitled but it was democratic - everyone was entitled

I didn't even vote labour and this one act has just cost me £350+

Reeves also confirmed the government has made a 22% two-year pay offer to junior doctors. Teachers and NHS workers will also get a 5.5% rise

Interesting how she differentiates between doctors and NHS workers - most people you will see or will be of actual help will be a 'NHS worker' rather than a doctor

Don't get me started on teachers :)

Lets not stigmatise everyone on benefits as some sort of cheat or scrounger, which the language here seems to be alluding to.

We all know of some benefit cheats or a number of people who should be working and just aren't but if you know, or even have good grounds for suspicion, of somebody cheating the system then get onto the DWP Fraud line. It is anonymous and works better than people are aware. My wife used to work on the DWP Fraud team and they got a surprising large amount of money back - enough to more than pay for the people in the team; unfortunately that team was something else which went under austerity - another false economy.

You knew darn well that that was going to be a red rag to me!

If the amount saved by limiting the winter fuel payment is going towards stopping young doctors completing their (very expensive to us) training and then emigrating to the former colonies down under or goes towards meeting the major teacher shortage the country is facing then it's worth the "sacrifice". After all I was going to spend mine on the lift pass for my second ski holiday next March - and I suspect the honourable member for Mundford would use his to part fund a trip abroad to watch aeroplanes!

Maybe it's an East Anglian thing but the Truss budget, the billions that Hancock paid out unnecessarily (that should save me from a libel allegation) on unusable PPE or the Johnson parties in No.10 while the rest of us were imprisoned at home is seemingly forgotten on here. The country is broke - and that didn't just happen in the last three weeks - and needs to be paid for.

Here we go again getting personal and ruining a thread - I am not thinking of myself

I have already received a couple of messages from friends who although not on benefits have to either work in their 70s or really count the pennies
