Museums where you can actually sit and touch things

Post by steamy » Thu Feb 08, 2024 8:40 am

Hi all,

The eldest is at an age where they want to see things up close (planes, helo's, anything that moves) ... we ruined them a bit by bringing them to the likes of Bournemouth Aviation museum a few times, where you can pretty much sit in and touch everything, so the likes of Middle Wallaop's museum (which is fantastic IMO) just doesn't do it for them (more looking, less things to sit in and play with)...

What is available around the UK, that they can sit in and pretend and play?

Steamy,
The Boscombe Down Collection just down the road from MW at Old Sarum, Salisbury is just such a museum. C.30 aircraft cockpits to sit in...

I visited Portland D-Day museum several years ago, very interactive exhibits (at least it was back then anyway).

Good call. This one is great for kids of all ages. Thoroughly recommend it. Might not be open for the season just yet...

Coventry Aircraft Museum is/was quite hands on, haven't been for a few years though..
If you can keep your head whilst all around are losing theirs, you have probably completely misread the situation!!

Yeovilton wasn't bad till recent times.
middle wallop was (and still is, luckily) good too.

unfortunately one of the best for hands on in my option, Newquay (Jag Cockpits the lot) got closed by a council who will undoubtedly sell off the land to some business who will use it as storage... :grr:

Back on topic and trying to provide something of use to you, Aeroventure at Doncaster has a few you can sit in.

Bit of a trek but the Dumfries and Galloway Air Museum lets you into quite a few of the exhibits

Supervised cockpit access available on a regular basis at NAM; as described in here: http://www.newarkairmuseum.org/NAM_open_cockpits

With the school half-term holidays approaching the next couple of weeks should be quite busy thanks to the efforts of our open-cockpit volunteers.
