Fly in a Spitfire UK?

Post by MCMLXXII » Mon Jan 29, 2024 1:27 pm

I have been given the chance to fly in a 2 seater spitfire, paid for by my parents. I understand there are many locations in the UK that this can be done, dependent on weather conditions and cost increases with longer flying time etc.

My question is, has anyone else done this that can recommend which company/location to go for?

I'm located in the West Midlands but not fussed about travel, as we'll probably make a weekend of it.

Many thanks

Neil

Wow, lucky you.
I haven't had the pleasure sadly.
Look at Duxford, not sure if they fly from there but would make for a nice weekend.
Enjoy
Cheers

not done it, but, I've seen it do runs from Lee-On-Solent.... which is a nice area to fly around... also, May onwards, the water is very much comfortably swimmable if you're making a weekend out of it, with Pompey and Southampton close by with lots of military attractions.

come on down to Devon and cruise along the Jurassic coast!
fly from dunk swell, home of the American gliders, or Exeter, who's hurricanes took the first kill of the battle of Britain!

Biggin Hill Heritage Hangar do flights, if you've got the cash a run to the White Cliffs and over the Capel le Ferne memorial, I expect as part of the flight you can have a nose round the other aircraft there. Also flights from other locations around the UK.

Or Aero Legends, they operate mostly from Headcorn, lovely grass airfield in Kent, again if budget allows South coast flights. They also operate from other airfields throughout the year.

I too was lucky to have a flight from my family as a 50th Birthday present. I flew from Biggin Hill with the Heritage Hangar, and Pete Kynsey as pilot. Departed out to the east over Kent, then North up to the Dartford crossing, and down to Brands Hatch before returning to Biggin. I was lucky to have control for 11 minutes of the 29 minutes airborne, and flew a wide 180 degree arc over the Dartford Bridge, having to stay outside of the London City zone. When we got to Brands Hatch Pete took over again and we did a victory roll over the racetrack!
After returning to Biggin and taking lots of photos of me inside and outside of the aircraft, and receiving a signed flight certificate, we were then all given a guided tour of the hangar with a very knowledgeable and informative gentleman.
An absolutely fantastic day that I will never forget, and highly recommended!

For me it would likely be Headcorn, Kent

Various options

Flew in a Dakota as photoship, spitfires over the channel/white cliffs it was very special. Thanks to Aerolegands and COAP.

Headcorn is a great place for It.

Whatever you decide enjoy and it’s great your parents have given you a truly memorable gift.

Apologies for the delay in replying and thanks all for the replies.

Although Headcorn would have been my preferred, and an iconic choice with flying over the White Cliffs of Dover and the Battle of Britain Memorial at Capel-Le-Ferne, I have booked a flight at Duxford through Aerial Collective at Duxford. This ties in with a 2 week camping trip at Willows campsite Mildenhall at the end of July/August.

Thanks again

Neil
