Any recommended red pens for underlining?
Hello all,
I would attach a screenshot from my phone but I can't seem to do that was trying show an example, basically I seem to get smudges when I use my red pen and ruler underlining serials in the Stuart Schofield MAM Book, not all the time but for some reason the odd red blob seems to appear on the nib and when you put it on paper it leaves a small blob of red on the paper and if you aren't careful it smudges quickly if you accidentally press it or skim the ruler over it. Also makes writing in the notes difficult (as I like to write where and when, like Fairford 15 for example)
These red pens were part of a pack from The Works so was cheap anyway, any recommendations for something better?

I've always used red BIC pens with the fine tips, the ones in yellow plastic - not the medium ones in clear plastic. Give the tip a clean with kitchen roll every 10, or so, lines to stop the build-up of ink.
Don't forget to give the edge of the ruler a good clean every so often too.
You probably don't need 20, but this is what they look like :- https://www.staples.co.uk/office-suppli ... 199110112/

Well, I've learnt summat there, Mike:- different ball-points in different coloured wrappers. I wish I could find fine-point refills for my Waterman collection of ball-points.

The other trick is to have the ruler upside down so the edge is not flat to the surface.
Re: Any recommended red pens for underlining?
Same principle works with standard clear BIC medium tip biros.
Re: Any recommended red pens for underlining?
Had you considered using a mechanical pencil? There are various colours available including https://www.amazon.co.uk/Pentel-0-5mm-C ... =8-36&th=1
C24.

I use Uni pin fineline pens, I guess it's what you get used to.
If you can keep your head whilst all around are losing theirs, you have probably completely misread the situation!!

Oh, how my other half could not stop laughing when I showed her this.
On a similar important point can anybody recommend a good tartan flask and the best bread for cheese and onion sandwiches?

Should the parka have the fur around the hood or not, what is the best type if “yes”. All vital stuff.NorvilleRogers wrote: ↑Thu Dec 14, 2023 4:19 pmOh, how my other half could not stop laughing when I showed her this.

The last two posts prove the saying "there are no stupid questions, only stupid answers"!
The OP explained the issue and got some sensible answers to a seemingly sensible question.

I think the OP has forgotten that he asked the question in the first place.

If you are just going to take the mick out of other spotters then you are probably on the wrong site - there are plenty of so-called 'norms' who do thatNorvilleRogers wrote: ↑Thu Dec 14, 2023 4:19 pmOh, how my other half could not stop laughing when I showed her this.

By the way I use a BIC 4 colour ballpoint - nice to have a backup colour

Re: Any recommended red pens for underlining?
Thank you very much will try that can see where I'm going wrong, wondered if it was the pens that were the issue!
I know delayed reply sorry busy driving coaches around and each night working out where I'm going etc gets me sidetracked forgetting I haven't looked on here yet!
Will need some pens soon anyway, think that 20 pack will do, stoll need 99% of the USAF stuff and a lot of other stuff

I use an old credit card for under lining however I do like the idea of an upside down rule
Most people I guess have gone digital, especially in the civil world but I like a book even if it's only a quick reference to carry around - comes in handy for checking mis-poles and unit allocations.

I ditched the hook sometime ago and went to Freebird DB subscription, replaced all the books, up to date list, just punch in serials and it marks it off for you.
However I've since realised how I miss being able to take the book and check what I need, or just flick through the pages and easily see how many A400's, Typhoons or whatever I need.
I don't recall having problems and messy pages when I was using pens then, but gone back to books this year

Re: Any recommended red pens for underlining?
I must say for me having a book to mark off is one of the fundamentals of the hobby - a visual representation in page form of what you have seen or what you still need to see.
Nothing better than the satisfaction of underlining an entire page or completing a batch ( happens more often in the civvy world )
To be honest for me the plane is just the thing that has a number so I don't care whether it's a T-41 Mescalero or a UH-60L or a B-1B on full afterburner
The fun is in the hunt
Each to our own I guess

I'll take a T-41 any day. I bet many on here don't know what one is!
