Why is it raining so much?

Post by AndrewBarclay » Sat Jul 15, 2023 9:58 pm

The answer is the 15th July is St Swithins Day where it is rumoured to rain for forty days and forty nights it may be an old fable or Old Wives Tall.

Not sure about St Swithens day, but I do think there are some weather related old wives tales that make sense. I still think the rain before 7, clear by 11 mostly works. I am no weather expert, but I remember seeing a weather report that said the jet stream is ultimately the main contributing factor to our weather, combined with the Azores high. Basically if the jet stream is below Britain, it means more rain, and if directly above, it means loads of rain, as seen in 2015, and currently, as it drags every low pressure directly over the country. We need the jet stream to sit above Scotland if we are to get good weather, as it drags the lows north to Iceland, and allows the Azores high to push northwards.

It’s an El Niño year which always has an impact on the world weather. Predictions say it could have an affect the rest of the year

Why? 2/3s of the planet is covered with seas and oceans.

🇺🇦 🌻 🇺🇦 ☂️ 😎

The first recording of an “El Niño” was in 1578. The climate phenomenon occurs every two to seven years, and is caused by a rise in water temperature in the eastern Pacific.

Of course, the world population has increased dramatically since then🥸

Howdo, C24.
I deliberately omitted population growth from my post above; thought I'd see how long it takes before another member brings it in!

Can't see the connection between population growth and the amount of rain falling on my head.

There will always be population growth it's literally a fact of life.

From the media - Google - it's appears the main concern amongst the boffins is the collapse of the gulfstream , the current not the twin engined business jet.

The succession of low pressures for the UK and the extreme heat in the med is all down to the good old Jetstream. Netweather.com has Jetstream position forecast maps covering several days and funnily enough around the 11th August the current intensity is projected to break down, which ties in with the improvement for us and more relief from the North African air for the med countries that they been suffering from. Nothing whatsoever to do with “climate change” no matter what the idiots in the media or companies like Google would have us believe. Just in case anyone asks, I consider myself a climate realist. ;)

I was a climate sceptic but I am not anymore - I believe, not that we can do much about it that the extremes are becoming more noticeable. Of course climate changes : witness the ice ages and earth's axis wobble etc but it has been pointed out that at the moment it is the rate of change that will cause stress as nature won't have enough time to slowly adapt as it has done over millions of years in the past.

According to wiki the Jetstream moves laterally over the northern hemisphere based on a seasonal temperature delta between arctic and equatorial regions: recently science has recorded higher winter temperatures in the Arctic so the temperature gradient between it and warmer regions lessens pushing the Jetstream northwards.

I don't think it is helpful to say people are idiots because they aren't as clued up as you obviously are in these matters.

There is also a suggestion that the warming polar regions are causing fresh melt water to alter the mechanics of oceanic currents in particular the gulfstream that this country relies on for its equable climate.
