Glastonbury 2023

Post by Gary » Fri Jun 23, 2023 11:34 pm

Anyone else watching? The Arctic Monkeys was painfully dull to watch, haven't really listened to their stuff since the first album but the new stuff sounds bland lounge music. Each to their own I guess, the crowd look lifeless for big chunks of the set.

Love most types of music except rap. Never been to a festival in my life. Passed me by somehow. [Just been to the Isle of Wight, met a lot of returning festival goers who loved it.]

Was it me or was the sound mix terrible on the BBC, couldn't hear Royal Blood or the Foos clearly and the crowd noise seemed to drown them out?

Never really listened to Arctic Monkeys even though wife plays them a lot,but while getting wrapped round a malt after our Bailiffing session last night I heard most of their set.I can be easily impressed but I was taken by the fact all the tracks sounded different, none reminded me of a track recorded by someone else and I believe the lead singer was recovering from a throat infection but still went on stage for a fair old time. For KevinJ I Admit I am aging but I quite often find things on the BBC where mixes make it difficult to enjoy.I know others who have said the same.I only seem to be going deaf on some BBC offerings

Sound is terrible for Guns N’ Roses, Axls vocals can hardly be heard at times. As KevinJ said I’ve notice the sound has been off for a few of the acts now

I would have to think you have to give them a bit of leeway its OPEN AIR subject to all the variables that can affect sound.Open air concert cant expect perfect sound .unless every mike, guitar, drum set and any other musical instrument were directly linked to the broadcast media you will never get perfection.Just enjoy what you can.I am in my study 20 ft away from the lounge and can hear Guns and Roses belting out.Asked my wife if any problems she said no but remember these guys are probably in their 60s .If you want perfection probably CD is answer.I saw Meatloaf in Aberdeen on command of the boss and really enjoyed it ,he interacted with the crowd.Went to Glasgow a couple
years later and saw him ,he did the singing but they had a younger lad doing the guitar dances etc.I thought it was great but two females in our pub said it was terrible he didnt sound the same didnt do his usual dances. We were meant to be there months before but he had a heart attack and we were offered money back,we went to the show and enjoyed it appreciatting the situation. Expectations can sometimes hide the enjoyment of the reality.

Should also have said in these heat conditions and pressure variables the signal from the site could be corrupted .Assuming they are pinging it between masts or sattelites now.Havent kept up to date since retiring.Suppose I could say I didnt give a Monkeys.Funny its bbc I noticed?

I really should not be listening to GnR right now as on Tuesday night i hope its 3rd time lucky(Covid then Cancellation) to see them live at Bellahouston Park.

As for perfection, i remember listening to a music person years ago who refused to listen to music on anything but vinyl as CD or any other digital format as some of the music disappears.

Have never been one for concerts, even though i saw A-Ha as a teenager, then i think Deacon Blue in my 20s. However, as the kids were older, my wife and i wanted a new adventure and took in Rewind, then decided to do Madness(The Frattelis as support) and The Proclaimers over the same weekend. HOOKED right there as soon it was back to Madness(The Farm as support), then Tom Jones and Snow Patrol before Covid took away our chance to see GnR and the Red Hot Chilie Peppers(hopefully soon). Best way to listen to music!

During Covid, the bucket list was created and since then, Deacon Blue and Texas were quickly ticked off, but others were discounted as unlikely to see again, then Bruce Springsteen changed that again last month.

We do have a disagreement in the house as Thursday night we managed to get to see Muse(The Warning and Twin Atlantic as support), and it may just be the best we have seen so far, but Texas Southside Anniversary tour might just edge it! GnR and RHCP to come and maybe Madness for the 3rd time!

Glastonbury has been talked about as well so who knows!

Saw GnR six years ago in an open air gig and they were great, but on last nights showing it’s time Axl hangs up the mic, he sings like your dad and looks like your gran.

Sorry not buying that, the BBC have decades of experience broadcasting live outdoor concerts and should have the sound mix perfect everytime, no excuses.

Agree that Axl's vocals were off, but still worth listeneing to just for Slash's guitar riffs - brilliant. Maybe that's why the Beeb had the music mikes turned up and the vocals ones turned down!

Oh, and I thought Axl looked more like Eddie/Suzy Izzard, than my Gran!

It looked like the crowd loved it, it just never came across well on TV. One thing I noticed was far fewer people holding up phones than most gigs and actually enjoying the show instead.

I think GnR were let down by the mics issues. Don't know if it was the same for the live audience, or just the BBC feed.

Slash's guitar performance was incredible, my wife described it as mesmeric.

I was a bit disappointed with the Foos TBH, my highlight was Mr Marr joining The Pretenders, class.

Should have clarified I wasn’t there but watching on the bbc so i agree with above the TV didn’t quite work or represent the show that well for me
Slash’s hat must be one of the most famous hats in the world???
