Jupiter nearest point to Earth

Post by Gary » Sun Sep 25, 2022 8:36 pm

Tomorrow Jupiter will be at its nearest point to the Earth in 59 years (367 million miles, usual average is around 600). Next time will be in 107 years.

Jupiter and the Sun are in opposition so Jupiter should be extremely bright

Lets hope the clouds part long enough to see it

While tonight it is at its closest, it has slowly been getting closer for some considerable time, and after tonight will equally slowly move away again. It has been by far the brightest object (after the moon) in the eastern night sky for months. Its four moons can also easily be seen, with even a modest pair of binos.

was it the brightest one in the sky last night with Saturn being the dimmer on SE of it?

By the way, after a day out in Lancashire I got off the train at Kendal around 1935 and saw the I.S.S. passing over at quite a high elevation. No chance tonight!
Will have to search for times beyond the week-end.
Roger
ps. dated 1st Oct: did see it last night around 2019L as sky cleared out to near 12T.
Tonight for the Manchester area we could see it again at 1928L; clouds permitting it should be bright.
