Yes, driving style makes a huge difference (I can tell when my wife has driven our car a lot!).

I am assuming those who have reported their mpg going to **** on the new E10/95RON (not just on here, but most newspapers are also carrying the same story) have been doing more or less the same journeys in the same driving style as they did on the previous E5/95RON fuel.
Absolutely - I am doing the same journeys (many very long) and my driving style really has not changed, not sure why it would it as a result of going from E5 to E10?

I am sure your driving style will not have changed, and it is the new fuel giving the poorer mpg.

Back to prices, just filled up at my local Esso:

E10/95RON 136.9p/L
E5/99RON 146.9p/L (their "Supreme +" fuel).

So it cost me 7% more, for which I am certain I am getting more than 7% improvement in average mpg.

The Esso E5/99RON pump states it has double the detergent of their normal E10/95RON, so maybe the better mpg comes from keeping the injectors etc cleaner?

Popped into local Morrisons filling station, only E10 fuel available no other apart from diesel..
If you can keep your head whilst all around are losing theirs, you have probably completely misread the situation!!

Think I will try a tank or two of E5/99 and see what it what it comes out at.

I think, by law, all standard unleaded has been E10 since September 1st 2021. It's only super unleaded that is now E5, and not all supermarket sites sell super unleaded - the Asda in Yeovil doesn't.

Sort of related to the thread (Fuel Cost)

https://theconversation.com/how-rising- ... les-168304

Something that I hadn’t really considered, I knew EV’s were cheaper to run and for some it is an important reason for adoption. It looks like that might change.
It’s nice to see an article that actually lists the cost of charging. For a time it wasn’t mentioned, just the hint of being cheaper or ‘free’.

With the change to E10 and the fuel being less stable and containing more ‘water’ how does this affect Plug in Hybrid vehicles ? They will obviously run on it but could it go stale if the vehicle use encourages mainly electric motoring ?
Just a thought.
Drive carefully everyone.

Idiotic to announce BP had to shut a couple of petrol stations. Panic buying and traffic chaos today!

The problem is the media, as usual, calling it a 'fuel crisis' which it isn't. :grr:

A couple of thoughts:

The tests in the media seem to only ever consider whether super unleaded gives better MPG than regular unleaded, completely overlooking the power increase it can give. I've got a 3.5L V6 petrol engine and super unleaded makes a huge difference in the acceleration and power, that's the only reason why I buy it.

Regardless of why the petrol stations around me in Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire are empty, they're empty. The government is a bit late saying people should only buy the minimum they need, the reality is we can't buy any right now.

People have gone crazy down here panic buying! Went to my local Tescos this morning and just a 2 minute queue! Considering people have been waiting hours! I'm happy!! 😂

Got a tank of Super unleaded (E5) and my fuel gauge seems to be happy again.

Obviously overall compared to the older unleaded fuel it's probably more expensive (I'd need a month or 2 of watching to know, but initial findings show it's a bit more to the MPG cost wise)

It's strange, my car (09 VW Golf), the fuel gauge didn't like the E10 stuff at all.... I put my tachometer on for one journey, and I drove 15 miles and my fuel gauge dropped nearly double at 25/30miles..... and I went through a tank (according to the fuel gauge) far faster than before...

All seems to marry up again with the E5 stuff ....

What would cause such a fluctuation, or for my fuel gauge to dislike it so much?

None available round here either; just got enough left in tank to get any shopping I may require.

Another fine mess.

It makes me laugh when people say there is no crisis as there is plenty of petrol. At a micro individual level if you cannot find petrol that is a ' fuel crisis'- obviously not as serious as famine but still a mess
