Mr Grumpy whinge

Post by slogen51 » Sat Sep 19, 2020 12:09 pm

Why do people , usually under 35, say when ordering food or drinks " can I get ... "

I just heard someone say " can I get a Lemonade , Orange juice and a Peroni"

What's wrong with saying "May I have " ?

You can get pregnant but you may have a Peroni.

NB. Google word assist ( what a joke that is) for Peroni is person.

God I can't spell whinge!

That one doesn't bother me, but the incorrect usage of was instead of were really grates. For instance in the title of the song by Midge Ure "If I was...". It's "if I were".

And don't get me started on there, their and they're.

Another Grumpy old man.

Don't get me started either.

Another one is people that write "could of" instead of "could have"!

It seems that a lot of people in the East Midlands, Lincolnshire & Norfolk areas say "as" instead of "has", I've noticed it on here and some Facebook groups too.

I hate 'can I get'. At school we were told never to use get or got anyway, clumsy language we were told. To this day I try not to, 40+ years.
In this world there's two kinds of people, my friend. Those with loaded guns, and those who dig. You dig.

I once received an email at work from a colleague in Texas which included the word "y'all" - took ages for the penny to drop (it's as in "how y'all doing?").

As a grumpy former newspaper sub-editor I just can't abide seeing apostrophes used in plural words. For example, going into a coffee shop and seeing on the menu that they sell panini's! Or looking at a tourist information board that says the local area has a wide selection of shops and cafe's! Aaaaargh!

That drives my nuts as well and it happens everywhere you look, what about plurals of aircraft names that end with a number - should it be F-15s or F-15's? I'd go for the former.

and cafe's!
Is that really an apostrophe or just a mis-placed acute accent?

F-15s - plural
F-15's - singular possessive
F-15s' - plural possessive

What really gets my goat is the use of 'try and' followed by a verb; it just doesn't make grammatical sense, but it's used here, there and everywhere, including news broadcasts. Muppets everywhere, take note: it's 'try to'!

Oh, one other: 'ten items or less'. It's 'fewer'!

Rant over. Stand easy.

I'm very, very sad and very, very pedantic; but I'm also an editor, so I get paid for it!

PS: the comma after the second 'so' doesn't need a character space.
