Yep makes total sense...face masks needed in shops where you pass by people in seconds, yet not needed in Cinemas, theatres, restaurants and pubs where you can happily sit in close proximity to someone for hours.

Hey Ho must just be me!

This may well destroy any high street recovery, most people I know will now shop online.

Why do people always refer to the situation as requiring face masks; the requirement is for a face covering and as indicated by the government guidelines a scarf so long as it is covering your face is perfectly acceptable.

Believe also includes Face Shields.Which you don't need to replace & you just wipe over with anti bac spray/wipe. Big plus don't mist up your Glasses.

Fair point regarding the terms masks...but to be honest a scarf in this situation is no more use than manboobs! on a fish..

A face covering is not to protect you, but others if you are infected. It will reduce the distance the virus can travel in your breath.

So if that's the case how come 60 cases have sprung up in a local hospital, where actual medical face masks are required to be worn?

Also doesn't seem to help in America where over 73% of people wear a covering but infections are rocketing, France where 78% of people wear a covering and cases are rising...wearing a face covering gives a very false sense of security, you will touch it regularly to adjust it, then handle it when you take it off, most will forget then to wash hands. Then potentially worse of all it will be disposed of in your rubbish or worse a roadside bin, when its actually pathogenic medical waste and should be treated as such...crazy guidance in my mind...I will comply but so don't agree it helps.

Also doesn't help when big retailers - Sainsbury's, Asda - that have large numbers of people in their stores, particularly at weekends, publicly announce that they won't enforce the wearing of masks/coverings. I didn't know the words 'mandatory' and 'compulsory' had alternative meanings. Sounds to me that they've announced this decision not to comply in an attempt to attract more shoppers - which means even less social distancing!

My wife was in our local ASDA a couple of hours ago and every customer was wearing a mask, however only a couple of the staff were wearing one and at least 6 others had no mask, or visor, on at all.
Why not? :S

The emphasis is on enforce, not comply, its to avoid the inevitable confrontation that will arise when mr shopkeeper asks my joe public to wear one and the answer is no

My wife works in retail and since the bulk of shops have reopened the abuse she and her colleagues receive is beyond belief

so most retail supermarkets and large shed like shops have taken the decision to simply advise customers that they should be wearing a covering(be that spoken or signs) but will not get into argument etc about non compliance

shop workers are not obliged under the terms of the law to wear coverings its up to them, (I have no issues with this)

The law is bonkers, everyone should be wearing them.

Agree the law is bonkers but disagree that everyone should wear one but respect your point of view on the matter

If you don't want to wear a mask Just go to the Government website and print yourself a badge. It's supposed to be for disabled and exempt people, but there doesn't appear to be any checks on eligibility.
Now where can I get facemasks for cats? It appears 1 has tested positive in Surrey, although some vets are saying it's a coronavirus but may not be covid -19.
