Mobile Phones?

Post by Vulcan74 » Sun Nov 03, 2019 12:36 pm

Good Afternoon

With the latest laws on the use of mobile phones in cars, I wondered if you are at a red traffic light and using the mobile or holding it in your hand is an offence.

Why would you even "wonder"?
Of course it is an offence!

The rule is basically if the keys are in the ignition, and you're sitting in the drivers seat, then using a mobile phone is an offence. All they are doing is tweaking the meaning of "using" to include taking photos etc.

Why should it be when you are stationary at a red light with the hand brake on ?

Get in the car, switch your phone off, then its not a problem. Avoids temptation to glance at the phone, its less about whether its an "offence" but more about "not seeing that pedestrian starting to cross" or "that kid following his mates across the road". Why do people feel the need to use a phone while driving?!? I know the planet is a mixed ability group but really.

No argument here there are people from all walks of life with no common sense or a care for others! I'm glad we agree.

Difficult to hurt anyone unintentionally if you're walking - and if you do manage to hurt someone then chances are it'll be yourself.

However, driving a 2 to lump of steel, aluminium and plastic fitted with NCAP rated air bags, crumple zones, seatbelts etc...

Quite simply because the law says so. More information can be found here if you need it:

https://www.gov.uk/using-mobile-phones- ... ng-the-law

Relevant to your question though:

"The law still applies to you if you’re:

stopped at traffic lights
queuing in traffic
supervising a learner driver"

Hope that helps explain the situation.

I don't know what planet you are on but not this one, have had many experiences of people walking straight out into the road with headphones stuck in their ears not looking. Yes I've being knocked down by a car but not my fault. Was using the pedestrian crossing at the time, and yes was looking before I stepped out. Maybe you don't agree with the mobile phone law!!!

I think he meant the "no sympathy" bit - not that it doesn't happen!

I'm now thinking that your original post was not you wanting to do it but that you may have seen someone doing it - am I on the right track?
