Post by Lowfly11 » Sun Aug 29, 2010 8:33 pm

I was watching BBC Breakfast programme this morning about the inhabitants of St Kilda Island off Scotland and it showed what was left which included a Radar station..it just showed a radar type dome on metal girder legs..what is this radar used for.

The radar on St Kilda supports operations in the danger area complex west of the Hebrides. In the 1980s these ops included Rapier SAMs, Lance battlefield nuclear missiles (without the warhead!) and release to service trials of Martel and Sea Eagle. The Sea Harrier was from Boscombe Down, carrying a Sea Eagle missile, and is pictured at Benbecula. The Dauphin is on the helipad at St Kilda delivering mail and urgent supplies, other equipment went by boat - typical weather for the area! Not sure about current use of the range - would be interested to hear if any one knows?
