Playstation 3 Dead after 'update' PS3 OWNERS PLEASE READ!!!!

Post by The_Edge » Sat Oct 24, 2009 8:51 pm

Hi guys and Gals,

I bought my PS3 last March 08 and have been getting the PS3 updates when they have been updated.I recently updated it with the 3.01 update.Last Wednesday night all hell went loose when Call Of Duty 4 stopped dead in its tracks.I tried again to play it but the same happend...i tried another game and that did the same.I posted a question on a PS3 website and i got loads of people in the same boat.
Turns out that SONY have known about this update corrupting the Blu-Ray drive of PS3's and havnt accepted responsibility for the it.Over a million people now have to buy new Blu-Ray lasers from their PS3's...SO BE WARNED :@ at £100 a go thats an expensive update..well done Sony you've done a 'Microsoft'!!!!! :@ :@ :@ :@

Is it only happening on the old PS3? I've had the PS3 Slim since it came out & it seems to be running fine (touch wood :'( ) If this does happen ,do you have to send it off to sony to get the blu-ray drive installed?

Hmm Not sure Dragon..Sony have been dodging this 'bullet' for awhile.I think you'd have a VERY good case with Trading Standards if Sony didnt fix the drive after you'd paid for the extra cover.

Could you post a link for the insurance, or if there isn't one how you get it?

Thanks for any help

I have the UK 40 Gig one.Its serial number is a CECHG03 so its been manufactured last year so not an old model by any means.
My new laser will take 7-14days to come from China..just in time for COD Modern Warfare 2!!!!!
Did you know that you can change the hard drive in the PS3 to alot more than 40-80gig?..Its the same size hard drive thats in most laptop pc's and its really easy to swap them..you just back your game saves up onto usb pen and format the new drive.

Hi Guys,
I have afew updates for you(if interested).
I managed to repair my PS3 by buying a new laser from China via Ebay.I checked some VERY good videos on youtube of how to changed the laser step by step. After a few hickups..I hadnt replaced one ribbon..whoops..It was all up and running..fingers crossed.
Anyway from what i have found out there isnt no apparent reason for the Blu Ray drive to fail other than in my opinion the system update is in some way burning the laser out.
Another problem is the dreaded Yellow Light Of Death!...My friend has just had this on his 40 gig UK PS3.It was featured on Watchdog in which SONY did nothing..this from the BBC Watchdog page.."Its a non-specific fault indicator that can be triggered in a range of different circumstances." Sony adds that the yellow light could indicate a problem caused by "any one of a range of issues that may inevitably affect any complex item of consumer electronics".
My friend rang a local repair shop and the guy informed him that his motherboard needed replacing costing around £65.From what i can gather the YLOD is mainly caused by overheating as this has caused some parts to melt!!!...You can check your PS3's fan or even cooling it down...One way of tackling this is to eject any disc thats in..turn the PS3 off and turn the main switch on the back of the PS3 off..place a finger on the Eject and at the same time turning the power switch on..when the unit powers up the fans kick in for about 30 seconds or so.
If summary DONT PLAY YOUR PS3 FOR TOO LONG!!!!.

Hope this is of use to someone

Regards

Gary

Is this with the extra fan unit that clips on-top or without it?
(See Here: http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/p ... SORIES.htm)
If it has over heated without it I would recomend that & its not too expensive. However theres only one out for the old PS3's, to my knowledge they haven't brought out a fan unit for the slim (yet...)
