Re: Monday/Tuesday Thunderstorm Heads Up
Had a nasty little storm pass through here this morning!
The sky went pitch black & the heavens opened with some of the heaviest rain I've seen for a long time. Thunder & lightning & strong winds were present too. Then all of a sudden the sky turned blue & sunshine appeared, just as if someone had flicked a switch. From start to finish it lasted less than 10 mins. Very strange weather indeed!!!

There’s some fairly hefty showers heading toward East Anglia (SW to NE) right now, including some electrical activity! So, if you’re currently around Mildenhall / Lakenheath for example you’ll need to be ‘zipping up tight’ or getting in the car pretty soon!

Pretty intense but short lived Thunderstorm just tracked NE through Mid into North Wales, quite impressive for daytime

TORRO TORNADO WATCH 2013/006 A TORRO TORNADO WATCH has been issued at 14:55GMT on Friday 25th October 2013 Valid from/until: 14:55 – 20:00GMT on Friday 25th October 2013 for the following regions of the United Kingdom & Eire: N England and Midlands S Scotland Much of Wales THREATS Isolated tornadoes; wind gusts to 65mph; hail to 25mm diameter; CG lightning SYNOPSIS Short-wave trough is moving NNE within an unstable rPm airmass. These storm pose a risk for large hail, damaging winds, and tornadoes. Other convection is developing further south-east - this may also become organised, but the risk is lower. Forecaster: RPK.
Re: Monday/Tuesday Thunderstorm Heads Up
Rob,
Do you have any photos of yesterdays trough initiated storms? Was watching them on radar with interest and if you have any structure photos then they would detail if any supercells did develop.

Hi Rich,
Sadly no i didn't get any photo's as it tracked 5miles East of the house along the Dee Valley. I was a bit lazy as any that have devloped that far south normally by the time they reach here die off and then kicks off again further north
Did find this is it's any use form yesterday http://vimeo.com/77816593

Yes, saw a video from Wrexham and it was almost constant thunder. Seems it was indeed a supercell for a time. One of a very few that form in the UK each year. The video you linked shows a gust front.

Might be worth saying; be putting everything you have that’s chargeable, on-charge now rather than wait until tonight [in case] there’s power cuts (mobile phones, torches, camera’s, etc.) and have candles to hand, remembering also all these popular cordless landlines won’t work when [if] the power goes off ~ should you be unfortunate enough to need the emergency services or just be able to check on anyone.
I enjoy a nice bit of interesting “weather” as much as anyone but at the same time hope we all have a trouble-free night and Monday.

Re: Monday/Tuesday Thunderstorm Heads Up
Interesting to see no further updates on this - could this 'storm' just be media hype due to lack of news?
Sat in study at the moment with the box on - very quiet but could be just because its a Sunday. Flight just going into Brize with 219 on board (does not sound like any issue with weather - pretty routine)
Current weather in West Berkshire at 21.57 local - some drizzle with not even hint of a breeze (much windier earlier today)
Hope it just passes by but wish you all a safe night
All the best

Re: Monday/Tuesday Thunderstorm Heads Up
Its just been a steady breeze so far here this evening with the wind reaching occasional gusts of around 15mph.
I know through my work channels (fire service) that we have today upgraded our preperations in Essex to deal with a severe storm, although general weather reports are still at amber, so I dont know where the severe warning came from & can only assume that we are preparing for the worst?
From looking at various weather reports it would seem that the wind will really start picking up on the southern coasts from midnight onwards, so things will probably start kicking off when we are all nicely tucked up in bed!

It's certainly become a bit lively down on the South coast right now.

Re: Monday/Tuesday Thunderstorm Heads Up
Just heard a massive bang outside but will wait till the morning to see what it was, I also just heard a wheelie bin come crashing down the road and then the loud bang of it hitting the telegraph pole, what stupid idiot would put bins out when there is hurricane force winds out?
Hope everybody else is having an calm night

Haha, I knew somebody would say.
Re: Monday/Tuesday Thunderstorm Heads Up
Didn't hit here until 6 this morning some really powerful gusts of wind resulting in 3 of my fence panels getting airborne.
So total damage from "The Great Storm" equals 3 fence panels and a broken gate not to bad.

Re: Monday/Tuesday Thunderstorm Heads Up
I know it's been bad in other parts of the country but it was a 'non-event' up here in Leeds. The wind overnight and this morning was nothing more than a stiff breeze with a heavish downpour first thing this morning on the way to work. Lot of blue sky out of the window at the moment.

Re: Monday/Tuesday Thunderstorm Heads Up
The media hyped it like mad with all this "Great storm" and even Sky News saying the word "Hurricane" which is utter nonsense as usual. Yes it was a bad storm which was correctly forecast well in advance but not really one to write home about in regards to wind speed and damage reported. Apart from the deaths it caused which is always the sad fact.
If the storm had developed properly 200 miles out west of Lands End, i think England would have come off alot worse, indeed maybe equal to 1987 but alas, it was still developing as it came over but that said, the expected sting jet did the job of damaging buildings and felling trees and unfortunately two deaths related to the wind and one related to pure stupidity.
Denmark and Northern Germany are being pounded right now, a lot worse than we got it. Helgoland experienced 118mph gusts earlier.

Re: Monday/Tuesday Thunderstorm Heads Up
I woke up at 6am & went outside to see what was left & to my surprise everything was ok
...
Along comes 7am & all hell breaks loose, as the gusts rapidly increased taking out 2 x fence panels & snapping my beloved 25ft 'Horse Chestnut' tree half way up the trunk
. Not at all happy, as I grew that tree from a conker which I planted 22 years ago. Luckily nothing else was damaged when it fell, but I'm gutted that its gone.
