I don't have the slightest interest in football but I've often been puzzled by the expression "it's coming home". Just exactly what is "it"?
The saying goes 'If I had to explain you wouldn't understand'. But I'm going to try.

The achievement of Winning, the celebration of Victory - bringing the Cup and the Medals and the Glory home to England. Yes I know, in Lossiemouth that may be hard to swallow.

:D

Thanks for your replies guys. I like yours Vulcanone. Tally-ho, not hard to swallow at all for someone not interested. I didn't even support Scotland. Your explanation of achievement etc has me just as puzzled because some people are saying "it's coming home" already and nobody's won yet!

I guess it's just one of these nonsensical phrases that's good for supporters in large numbers to chant together.

I'll stick with aviation!

lots of people don't like football and that's fine. I don't like watching tennis.

But soccer banter with someone who doesn't like football is like going to the pub with someone who doesn't drink. Pointless :)

Well starting on Saturday (hopefully) is the British and Irish Lions tour of South Africa. No overpaid players in this game; the Lions are still technically an amateur team and each player receives a meagre daily allowance (unless things have changed).

I don't watch tennis either. I'm a Rugby man, don't want to go off topic too much 😂 just glad England smashed the Bosch 😊 (been watching too much Blackadder goes forth) 😊

Well, back home now and recovered...(ish)...
I went to see some great mates close to RAF Northolt in NW London (not too far from Wembley as it happens); Unsurprisingly, we ended up in a Beer Garden for the game. Absolutely astonishing event, great crowd, mates, beer and the win!!!
Despite waiting 24hrs before returning home, the noise, atmosphere and singing is still ringing in my ears!
What a superb experience.
Critically observing Pension regulatory activity... :D

They’re lyrics to a song from Euro 96 - “Football’s coming home”. In other words, the game of football was invented in England and we’re going to win the football tournament and bring the trophy ‘home’.

Should be a good couple of days footie coming up but why do we have to have Graeme " England are Negative " Souness on the tele? It's bad enough having to listen to Roy " 33 goals in 300 matches at Man U" Keane.

The Swiss team look quite good , not in Spain's class but not bad maybe England on a bad day, so I thought I bet given the eclectic range of names in today's Swiss squad that very few were actually born in Switzerland. I couldn't be more wrong - 9 of the 11 were born in Switzerland and of the remaining two, Embolo moved to Switzerland when he was 5 and Shaqiri was aged one when his family moved. Impressed.

I remember when countries like France and Switzerland were not considered to be football nations.
