Sky Broadband Problem

Post by RichC » Fri Jul 02, 2010 2:00 pm

Has anyone had any problems today?
Keeps disconnected every 15mins for about 15-20mins each time. Useless trying to tell Sky the problem, useless communication skills.

Hi....

Sorry for the moan...but the mere mention of SKY has got me on the soap-box....

My brother had sky broadband installed last week.....
He could not get on to the net at all...
I spent 5hrs on the phone talking to their support...
We did all the usual stuff...PC compatability / test signals..etc - no joy

Then they wanted me to take the socket off the wall - I refused
So they said it would cost £99 to send out an engineer
The conversation became quite heated at this stage :grr: )

In the end we were told it was an issue at the telephone exchange :'(
.....and they would rectify it the next day

He has had loads of problems since then....
Not logging on at all some days...
or taking 10mins to log on...but once on ..it was running very very slow!!

As you can probably guess...I am not a SKY fan at the moment!

I hope you have better luck than we did ;)

Regards

Ben

It's disconnected now around 30 times today.... if i try and diagnose the problem whilst it is disconnected it says it is a DNS error.
Then it auto connects suddenly and its fine (im on here typing obviously) then it will suddenly drop off again (im expecting it too any moment)...for another 15-20mins.

Im not on Sky broadband, but occasionally i get that same prob. When we get days where its going to do that it can play up all day, always the same, DNS prob. Our provider is TalkTalk (carphone warehouse) and thy say its down to old wiring into the house.(?)
They sent us a top whack router that would supposedly stop the prob of hang ups and boost the speed a little. It did niether. Sometimes it is comparable to old dial up! Always the same prob though, DNS (Domain Name Server) problem.
We got anybody whos a Sky engineer on the forum??

Correct me if I'am wrong but don't Sky ,Talk talk etc use the BT lines and exchanges, the futher away from the exchange the slower your connection gets and the chance of faults gets greater. Plus today you had the Holland v Brazil game and Andy Murray semi, so the BT network being as old as it is ....   it would be struggling.
A mate of mine moved from BT to Sky because of speed issues and drop out probs but says there is no difference, bothare cr*p. I use Virgin Media and have had no problems

It's still doing it now, has done now for about 18hrs.
Its not a slow connection, it just keeps disconnecting every 10-20mins for about 10-20mins but when its online, my connection speed is just over 8mb so its not slow at all.

Never had this problem before this morning. Last night i was on it until 0200 and shut it off to go to bed, in the morning, it was like this.

The little @ light goes off on both routers i have been testing it on today so its not a router problem either.

What could go wrong overnight? :S

I'm with Virgin Media 20meg broadband.
It's let me down once in 4.5 years (network being optimised), i often check the connection speed, rarely dips below 20meg.
I't does 'hang' occasionally, only for 10-20 seconds at the most and not very often.
I'm sure this is a DNS problem, if i'm downloading at the same time as i surf the net, the web page will hang but the download continues.

All in all, mustn't grumble.

Hi Rich, although I'm on AOL, I had similar problem on Thursday night at about 22:30. One minute I was reading the news, next I was offline! As with you, when trying to sort it I was told it was a DNS error.
Did you try your 'phone line when you were offline? I think it is a fault with BT as my 'phone was dead at same time internet was down. It only happened once, but lasted about 20 minutes. When 'phone came back on my net connection auto started.
I just assumed that BT had been doing some work on the exchange, but as with all utilities companies couldn't be bothered to tell the customer first :@ Luckily I wasn't doing anything important at the time.
Hope you manage to get your problem sorted soon, Steve

My internet has been completely shagged for about 3 weeks now but I'm not with Sky. I'm constantly emailing my ISP but very little progress has been made yet.

I'd use cable if I could, but living in the sticks of Lincolnshire means our options are limited.

we are with BT broadband, and I have to say, touch wood, we have never to my knowledge been offline in the past 3 years unlike when we was with tiscali broadband. We considered sky but then decided on BT as its there lines most ISP use so why go with anyone one else. yes its expensive, but we run anything from 3-7 computers off it at anyone time. One word of advice though bin the useless home hub they provide and buy a real router.

Hi folks,

VERY strange problem indeed.
I had several days of on/off connection. It got worse and worse...
Initially it went from disconnecting every 20 minutes and staying offline for 20mins before reconnecting itself for another 20mins and so on.
Then two days later, after turning it on for the first time (went camping) it was disconnecting every 5-10 seconds and staying offline for 40-50mins at a time. By this time i was angry rather than just frustrated before.
Sky turned me over to Tier II help and they were adament it was a router problem.
I clearly told them i had tested several routers (Sky Netgear and Belkin) and it was doing it on both. They told me to check the face plate and test connection inside the phone socket, which i did before they told me, and it was still doing it from the test socket.
Did all the router resets etc via the control panel on the webpage (typing in IP and password) and so on.

But again they were adament it was a router problem. And told me they were sending me out a new router and everything would be fine.
Whilst the router was in the post... the connection one afternoon miraculously came back on and hasn't disconnected since.... like a click of the fingers and it worked again.

It had to be at the exchange, i'm sure of it.

We had similar problems on o2 Broadband, router dropping connection with a very loud clicking noise, then coming back on with another click a few minutes later.

Rang o2 at 2pm on a Wednesday, explained the problem, and by 10am Thursday we had a new router. Problem solved? No.

Rang them again at 10pm on a Saturday, spoke to a nice guy from East London, he said he was working the night-shift, and would monitor our line and run diagnostics on it. He rang be back at 9am on the Sunday, told me we had 8Mbps running (We do, and we get it) and our line can take 11Mbps (It can, they did it), so he wasn't sure what the problem was. He said he'd get back to me.

Rang me back at 4pm on the Sunday, patched me through to technical support, who messed about with the settings for our line (Something about the amount of noise allowed!) and we've not had a problem since.

Not bad for £7.50 a month!
