Poppy collection

Post by Condor68 » Sat Nov 02, 2024 9:54 pm

Never really got an answer to this from alleged informed sources.Tomorrow I will be out early wandering round allocated streets with my wife Laura selling Poppies as ususal.Cant remember when my wife started it.Thing that puzzles me is the most used reason for refusal s I bought one in a shop so sorry. My problem is we are told by the British Legion that we cant sell them until a week before the Remembrance Sunday.NO one we have asked can say why?I should also say there are amazing people out there who literally leave money and a note to say where it is if they are out, there is an old chap who waits in to see my wife (bit worried there but if he wants her and puts the cash in for the poppy OK)he always gives a tenner, there are others who answer the door and actually have a poppy in a jersey and still go and get something to put in the box. These are usually 5 to 10 pound jobs. One woman apologised for not finding change as she was in a hurry to pick her Husband up,he was a pal of mine who I didnt know collected and was out with Poppies at the other end of the town. Wind or rain we will be out tomorrow and I am sure a few quid will be raised for those who served. If possible please give.

Thank you
Keith

We always buy Poppies every year even if we have one already. My Nan used to sell Poppies for the British Legion & strangely enough she passed away on November 11th 1985 at the age of 59. Well done to you & your wife. Godbless you.

We had a Poppy Box at our dance last Thursday. This week the dance was free, except that a donation was suggested. 72 people attended, and I suspect most people, if not all, paid the usual fee in the British Legion box. My Father was a Submariner during the war, and my wife's Father was in the Polish Army in Warsaw. 'Nuff said!!. They both survived the experience. Here in Suffolk, because of it's wartime history, people are very respectful of the military in this area.

Firstly, it has been the Royal British Legion since 1971. I was present at Annual Conference for the announcement and believe the Royal Charter is important and should not be forgotten.

As for the dates, you should find a leaflet which changes every year in every tray of poppies or with each collector's badge. This would explain that the starting date is the Monday which is thirteen days before Remembrance Sunday. Anyone collecting outside the period would theoretically fall foul of Charity Commission regulations.

The worst excuse I used to find was "I haven't got any change.' Perhaps things have moved on with you quoting more plastic money but the introduction of contactless terminals was long overdue.

Finally the money raised will also benefit dependents of ex-service personnel.

Thank you for a "good news" story.
I have always purchased the paper poppies from street or store sellers over the past 40+ years that I have been a so called adult, but migrated to the smaller metal ones over the past couple of years.

I have been out in the local supermarket accepting donations for the Poppies, I am a member of the local RAFA who assist the RBL in manning the various collection points, the local branch of the RBL have moved with the times and have card readers for those who have no change.
