Slogan you didnt mention the fact that he is always pleading for more funds from Westminster without clearly explaining how its going to work after Independance.Apart from massive taxes which are already starting.Think he is beginning to see he got dumped with the poisoned chalice.
Re: Will Sunak Survive Until The Election
5000 days of tory government. When Cameron came to power the national deficit was 770 billion and he said 'the responsible thing to do is to get a grip on the national debt', we had austerity under Cameron and Osborne as a result. The debt is now, £2,670 billion, gone up by £380m per day, every day. Figures from the Office Of National Statistics. The tories have failed, and failed repeatedly. With these figures whoever comes next has a monumental task of fixing all that's broken and rebuilding the economy, it won't be easy and will take years. Added to this is repairing the damage from Brexit, remember it was Brexiteer Rees-Mogg who said it would take 50 years to see the benefits. Even longer now.
And, the two highest defence spending Prime Ministers were Harold Wilson and Gordon Brown, both Labour.

What about the famous note left by Gordon Brown's Treasury secretary to the incoming Tory chancellor " I am terribly sorry there is no money left"
I think COVID measures knackered the governments budget targets as it did for every country in the world apart from China - funny that! Actually national debt as a percentage of GDP has come down to about 97%, after COVID it was over 101% of gdp !
Also the then Government under Cameron didn't want Brexit - in my opinion the EU influenced by the French stitched up Cameron because the French have never wanted the UK in Europe as we were seen as a road block to a European Super State

Liam Byrne.
We owe the French one then
Re: Will Sunak Survive Until The Election
OK I'll bite. All outgoing ministers leave notes, some serious with useful information, some for comedic effect, but that still doesn't explain why the deficit has grown so much. On this point, Labour deregulated the city, naive at best, incompetent at worst but it wasn't the governemnt at the time that got greedy and after that and awarded massive unsustainable bonuses and behaved irresponsibly to get those bonuses. Remember last year Sunak wanted to lift the bonus cap that had to be brought in to curb those behaviours. The collapse of the US Sub Prime mortgage market that started the crisis was totally out of the control of anyone in the UK.slogen51 wrote: ↑Sun Jan 21, 2024 8:22 pmWhat about the famous note left by Gordon Brown's Treasury secretary to the incoming Tory chancellor " I am terribly sorry there is no money left"

yes COVID was unexpected, but as we're seeing incompetence at best and corruption at worst saw eye watering figures of our money being wasted, with thousands of lives lost needlessly. Eat Out To help Out anyone?
Can you explain how France via the EU stitched up Cameron? When the EU was very publicly saying it didn't want the UK to leave, still says it would welcome us back? The 'European Super State' is fiction, where is that a stated aim?
I'm not a fan of the current Labopur party, far from it, but the tories have to go, they're dragging the country down in every way imaginable.

Quick search of the Office For National Statistics website
"Main points. UK general government gross debt was £2,636.9 billion at the end of Quarter 2 (Apr to June) 2023, equivalent to 101.2% of gross domestic product (GDP)."

I can't compete with Google
Anyway the government have been cr4p by most people's definition and hence we will have a change no doubt in October
Job done
The Tories will have their own version of the wilderness years and if the cycle continues will be back after two terms sometime around 2029/2030 when we will all be driving Chinese cars powered with Chinese batteries oh joy

Re: Will Sunak Survive Until The Election

This is a bit of a ramble…
The vote of an individual under the present system might make a difference but only if it cast on the ballot paper. So why not try it?
Now the historical bit.
Prior to the 1964 election my colleagues and I were given a project to postulate about the future of Europe based on the events since WW2. (See notes below)
I also investigated the political parties, their members’ experiences and each manifesto.
Wilson had worked in the Board of Trade and an economics degree. He got my vote.
That was my first mistake in politics, a mistake that I’ve made on each subsequent election.
“Yes, Minister” & “Yes, Prime Minister” could be used to describe my recent views of all forms of government worldwide. Backhanders from public funds is endemic in my opinion.
The European Coal and Steel Community was a European organization created after World War II to integrate Europe's coal and steel industries into a single common market based on the principle of supranationalism.
The European Atomic Energy Community is an international organisation established by the Euratom Treaty on 25 March 1957 with the original purpose of creating a specialist market for nuclear power in Europe.
When did Britain first join the EEC?
The UK had first applied to join in 1961, but this was vetoed by French President Charles de Gaulle. A second application, in 1967, was again vetoed by France. After de Gaulle had relinquished the French presidency in 1969, the UK made a third and successful application for membership.
Germany runs the EU using unelected bureaucrats, whilst
France, funded by UK, influences our immigration policy.
That said, life has improved with the various governments, I currently have access to 3 inside WCs and soft toilet paper which is better than one outside and the previous day’s newspaper during my school days.
Recent dental treatment and my last surgical procedure came from savings.
Luckier than many despite my voting record.
E&OE?
Remember; learn by rote. ;-)

The best short effort would be for you to read the links and relate the plot lines of the tv series.

I was alluding to the EU bureaucracy, the Humphrey’s in “Yes Minister”. These people are not democratically elected.
Several years ago a/the German senior bureaucrat was replaced by another German.
Second, we pay France and they seem unable to prevent small boats from leaving a very short length/area of their coast.
Vote anyway, literally

Excellent links, thanks. Well worth a read to dispel some myths.

One of my friends works on Lifeboats on the Kent and Sussex coast. Despite popular belief the French are stopping quite a few boats setting off, and stopping others close to the French coast. I don't have figures but he gets called out on occasion when a boat is reported en-route only to find it doesn't appear as the French have stopped it or turned it round. What's going on there and the stories of the people on the boats and the practices of the people smugglers is a whole other world, beggars belief.
