That really isn't a handball - how can you "make yourself bigger" by balancing yourself? Can't expect all defenders to defend with their arms pinned!

Problem is Iain, is the the fact UEFA have their ruling of, ball on hand, no matter how, is handball.

But they are the rules of the sport - in the outfield when a goal isn't likely often players do defend with arms down or even behind their backs, especially at free kicks because they don't want to concede a free kick.

In the box however arms are flapping and often get in the way of a shot at goal - it's the same for both sides so I don't see the problems

You must be blind then as all the commentators said it was never a penalty and your the only person who has said it was a penalty, The rule is handball not chest to hand then it's handball.

His arms were spread and the ball hit his hand - penalty

It is harsh but they are the rules - you have to abide by the rules otherwise it's not worth playing the game

VAR will no doubt cause some more tweaking of the rules next season

Except it didn't - the ball was hit square into his chest, THEN went into his arm - that is not "handball" (Considering it isn't even his hand ;) )

They will just keep chopping and changing the rules as if that's the issue, it isn't - it's the corrupt officiating.

I watched it again on YouTube and ball runs off the chest on to elbow - his arms are outstretched and instinctively move towards the ball only a very slight movement but a reflex reaction - unlucky but hand ball in the box

Very telling. Never a penalty, just like the vast majority that are given these days. And I'm from Sunderland!

The VAR official who gave the erroneous advice has been stood down. Back to the larger picture of how these unacceptability bad decisions can affect the integrity of the game - what happens if Newcastle miss out on the group stages.

The VAR official will be the scape goat but Szymon Marciniak aka the referee should be suspended also. Ultimately he didn’t have to give it. He won’t be suspended as he’s the poster boy for UEFA referees.

Sorry Mike, you're in the wrong camp. But you won't listen to the others.

VAR is supposed to overrule "Clear and obvious" errors, and it wasn't given, so shouldn't really have intervened. And of course the ref was showed stupid slow mo's.

Agreed. He was superb up to that point from what I saw (admittedly I was flicking between 3 games). He should have told VAR to poke off

Excuse me I do listen - you lot say I am blind because I don't agree with you.

Two or more match referees looked at the playback and decided a penalty should be awarded - yet the armchair experts say the referee is wrong. Also I wouldn't take much notice of ex players as these were often the same players who would either con the ref or crowd him/her when a decision goes against them.

Football is a sport where the players are dependent on a human referee and every individual ref could come to a different decision - that is all part of the game - it's a subjective sport unlike darts or the 100M sprint that are factual. VAR is there to assist where a serious error has been made and I would say missing a handball in the box is serious - probably happened because the ref was unsighted.

As far as I can see under the existing rules if a ball hits the defender on the hand ball area and the defender had raised or spread his arms then that is a penalty - it is a clear rule but difficult for a ref to enforce as the box can be packed with players and the ball could be moving rapidly and difficult to track.

In many ways I agree with you - the refs decision on the field should be final - we don't need or want VAR but we are where we are and the fourth official with the benifit of slow motion replays watched by a team of assistants can bring and Infringement to the attention of the referee.

United need one of those dodgy penalties to stay in the champions league after conceding three goals

43 million on Onana what a joke, United would have won the game if not for his mistakes tonight still it was a great game with some brilliant goals.

Forget the Newcastle vs PSG game. Would been interesting to hear what VAR would made of Barnsley vs Wycombe last night. Having sat though Wycombe at Weston Homes aka Peterborough last month and their time wasting. Couldn’t help but laugh

That was quite an interesting one, not sure on the rules with keepers there...but funny after hearing about all the time wasting.
