Looking for info regarding Mildenhall / Lakenheath local area

Post by MCMLXXII » Fri Jul 28, 2023 9:58 am

Good Day all

I have a 5 day camping trip planned with the wife, starting this sunday at Willows campsite. Along with Mildenhall, we also plan to visit Lakenheath, armed with my camera.

I'd like to seek assistance from local's on what other places of interest there are in the area?

I like my photography, though pretty pants at it, and have seen Lakenheath Fen RSPB Reserve so thats one idea for me. We both also have an interest in anything military related but open to other suggestions for days out.

Some people have suggested Trip Advisor, though nothing of real interest comes up (maybe I'm searching from wrong location).

Any suggestions will be much appreciated.

If I had to spend some time not plane spotting I would go to lackford lakes to see the kingfishers then carry on into Bury st Edmonds ( A1101) but to be honest I'd rather just sit at Lakenheath incase the A4 Skyhawk goes out !
I hope you have a good time down here whatever you choose to do.
Dave.

If you're a fan, there is the Dad's Army museum in Thetford.

USAAF Mighty 8th memorial garden in Abbey Gardens. Abbey Ruins.
Maids cross Hill Lakenheath - Wildlife right next to the base.
As Dave says - Lackford Lakes part of the Suffolk Wildlife Trust.
The Swan at Lavenham the Airman’s bar. Lavenham generally.
Thetford Forest. Lynford Stag
Ely
There’s lots of places to see and visit.

A little bit further afield, Marham aviation heritage centre is open Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday. The National Trust's Oxburgh Hall is between Lakenheath and Marham if thats of interest.

Go the coast: the North Norfolk coastal area is a beautiful unspoilt coast line from Holcombe around past bacton towards the area where the seals nest or whatever seals do - can't remember the name - Hornsey Gap?

Blickling Hall, National Trust, has a museum dedicated to RAF Oulton - from where Murray Peden,( author of A Thousand Shall Fall) flew with 214 Squadron.

100th Bomb Group museum at Thorpe Abbots is well worth a visit and is just down the road from the Flixton musuem that was mentionef earlier. The 100th BG eventually became the 100th ARW that flies the Mildenhall KC-135s.

Two hours drive from EGUN is Coningsby where there's the chance of some action and a guided tour around the BBMF is exceptional.

The Wellington pub in Feltwell, a good pint and plenty of history regarding the Wellington bomber.
