Sad news that he's passed away, not just a great commentator but a great writer of advertising slogans like "A Mars a day helps you work rest and play".

Not usually one for commenting in these threads, but he was one of those distinctive and memorable voices from my childhood in particular.

The chequered flag has finally dropped...and there goes Murray Walker OBE.

For my generation at least, every sport had it's signature commentator, and Murray was motorsport. RIP Sir you will be missed, but remembered so fondly.

So many memories of him over the years. Sometimes inaccurate. In the Racing Magazines, letters occasionally appeared criticizing his comments. Many other letters appeared telling these people to 'leave him alone' He was a total enthusiast!. He always denied that he wrote 'A Mars a day'etc. himself, but says he was part of a team that came up with it. Typical of him to be modest. Lovely man.

Very sad news indeed, I remember him commentating on motorcycle scrambling on a Saturday afternoon many many years ago, he led a full and varied life, a tank commander in WW2 I believe.
RIP Murray..
If you can keep your head whilst all around are losing theirs, you have probably completely misread the situation!!

He could always make the most boring race interesting with his enthusiasm and knowledge.

RIP and God Bless, Murray :'(

Your interviews with and commentary on the great Dave Bickers were the highlight of the BBC’s motocross coverage on a Saturday afternoon for me ;)

Clive James (I think) said that in his quieter moments, Murray always sounded like a man with his trousers on fire

Thanks for loads of great memories😔

The happening I always remember was dear old Murray poking Nigel Mansell on the forehead when he had a massive lump there. A true loss but at 97 he had a very good innings, or should I say circuit.
