Pity ( for some ) that the Trumpster didn't build a golf course near Mildenhall.

Re: Congressional investigation into USAF use of Prestwick
sadly having read the congressional letter https://www.politico.com/f/?id=0000016d ... fb19f90000 I suspect the US Air Force will be giving PIK a wide berth sooner rather than later just to avoid the fallout
Re: Congressional investigation into USAF use of Prestwick
There is a Golf Course near Mildenhall - The Royal Worlington and Newmarket Golf Club.
Here we go........ The Devils Knockin' at my door!
Re: Congressional investigation into USAF use of Prestwick
Most of the crews stay in Ayr Troon or Kilmarnock, sometimes when there's an event on in the area such as the Ayr Races then they'll need to stay further out due room availability, possibly Turnberry, but so what?

and the AMC response which is that military bases are often closed when they want to use them so they have to use civilian airports that are open. to be fair Mildenhall did restrict its opening hours for transient aircraft a few years ago to such an extent that it caused most of the transient KC135 movements to move away.

Re: Congressional investigation into USAF use of Prestwick
Regardless of whether or not this is related to Trump shenanigans it is incredible to think how much the USAF must be spending on landing and handling fees at PIK compared to doing night stops at their own base (i.e. Mildenhall), where food and lodging is cheap and plentiful. I assume landing fees at the Hall for USAF aircraft are low or non existent too?
I work in flight ops and sometimes the quoted costs at a regional sized airport for handling something like a Twin Otter are enough to make your spill your coffee. Scaling that up to a C-17 or KC-135 they must be spending a fortune at Prestwick. Why they would do this when they could stop at Mildenhall for a fraction of the cost is very odd. Appreciating of course the reduced hours at Mildenhall (though plenty of USAF visitors arrive at PIK during normal office hours), and the frustrations heard on the scanner by visiting crews with base Ops seemingly being unable to get flight plans sorted out.
Anyhow, fingers crossed they all start coming into the Hall from now on....

The USAF have been using Prestwick since the day the USAF was born. Nothing new here, move along.

Please don't tell me, for one, to "move along"!
It is the costs that are under question not using the airport. If it was the MOD being charged unnecessary fees, how would you feel as a taxpayer - assuming of course that you are one.
Maybe put your apparent bias to one side (given your username) and consider the logic.

Re: Congressional investigation into USAF use of Prestwick
It may well be that the costs of using Prestwick, or Belfast, or Shannon, or Dublin, are less than using Mildenhall. Do you know ? I don't. And PIK 24/7/365 with welcoming handling, civilian hotels and restaurants. I think the USAF and their units and crews will have considered the logic. Indeed, its given to you in the link above.
Re: Congressional investigation into USAF use of Prestwick
Irrespective of bias, it is clear from the USAF statement that they have a good strategic reason to use civilian airports such as Prestwick.
Re comments about pricing for Twin otters and such, I can understand that if the aircraft was operating in and out of said location for a purpose that fees could be set at any price. However, given how competitive the transit market is with the likes of Prestwick, Shannon, Belfast, Glasgow all touting for the same business I doubt the customers will be getting fleeced to that extent.

And now investigating aircrew staying down the road (20 miles) at Turnberry Golf Course who offer discount deals and free golf for US service personnel. Hmmmmm, that or a Premier Inn.

Might just be cheaper for USAF to refurb the runways at Turnberry.
Not so long back I have seen aircraft arrive there for the Open.
