Runway permanently closed?
Runway permanently closed?
I’ve been told that Kinloss’s runway has now been been permanently deactivated as of last week or the week before. Large White crosses have been applied at each end.

Re: Runway permanently closed
I can't believe what I've just read, any idea why they've done that, Scott?
Re: Runway permanently closed
No idea Mike, was told this morning by a work colleague that used to work there, he was told and shown photographs of the White crosses being applied by someone that currently works there.
Re: Runway permanently closed
Are we sure it was the main runway, or just touching-up the markings on the Northside taxiway that runs parallel to 25/07?
Re: Runway permanently closed
Was thinking that myself, but my colleague was sure it was the main, he used to work there himself when I was at Lossie.

Re: Runway permanently closed
Should show up on Notams for Kinloss as they tend to use the wording ".... facility pemanently withdrawn" in the flight planning documents and with an effective date confirming the closure.
Still surprised they will not retain as a relief/emergency landing ground as a lot closer than Inverness or Aberdeen depending on the nature of an emergency or the weather pertaining on the day. As Lossie has a lot of a/c and with their different operating requirements losing Kinloss seems like a brave choice by the bean counters

Re: Runway permanently closed
Would have thought the recent Bolthole situation would have shown how vital Kinloss is to Lossie.

Re: Runway permanently closed
When the bean counters are the ones making the decisions, it doesnt matter how vital someplace like Kinloss is when someone else is paying for suitable facilities not that far away. What is it we have in Scotland with suitable facilities other than Lossie? 5x 24hr airfields, one just down the road open for 20hrs, and 6 others open between 07.00 and 21.00 ish?

Re: Runway permanently closed?
I’ve since seen the photo, and 07 has been crossed out, so looks like that’s the end of flying from Kinloss.
Re: Runway permanently closed?
Traffic lights on the Findhorn Road have been removed also apparently
Cheers Niall

Yes it's closed. That's why flying club has moved to Lossie.

I heard a Typhoon Pilot telling an American Exchange Pilot a few weeks ago that the Airfield @ Kinloss had been decommissioned while he was showing him local landmarks.

Still in the Mil AIP as an active airfield, with no mention of crosses on runways or any unavailability.

Re: Runway permanently closed?
As it is PPR I'm pretty sure no one will be able to get permission to fly in. Paperwork just hasn't caught up yet.
Re: Runway permanently closed?
With the increase of use at Leuchars they probably don't need to keep the Kinloss Runway open
Re: Runway permanently closed?
Perhaps with Putin's present attitude it might be sensible to get the turpentine out ?
