And the defence estates factsheet.

It's going to be a long Q1 next year as we wait for some firm decisions.

An RAF flying station yes..... remember though that NATO have massive interests both operationally and financially in Kinloss. As has been seen since this year with the amount of deployed a/c into the base.

As said "wait and see" there may be a twist in this to come.

well i read today some pro's and con's to lossie and leuchars staying open and overall for QRA north leuchars had far more going for it to survive between lossie and leuchars only because of the larger populated area's edinburgh, glasgow, perth, dundee also the nuclear power station which lies just a stone throw from leuchars and to quote its stratigic position in scotland was overwhelming, but we all know this means nothing, because things that we would do and things that make sense is not the way of the goverment, its all very sad i really hope lossie leuchars and marham stay open and they close somewhere like linton on ouse or other training air base only from a point i read in air forces monthly, with retiring the jaguar, harrier, 2 sqd of Gr4's and nimrod the RAF now has more than enough extra pilots and nav's so the need to train more is maybe not required in the near future they quoted the next 3 years im certainly no expert on this so am here to be corrected

i think the qra will move to lossiemouth, theres not a lot of distance in it for a eurofighter typhoon.they will move remainding typhoons to lossiemouth.think there worrying about filling up leuchars with the remaining typhoons, coningsby just about at the level of a pretty full base with 60-70 typhoons in there.we havent got that many left on order to fill leuchers.gr4s are being slashed so room for typhoons to move in.??

it will not happen. The astronomical costs involved with setting up a Typhoon base is going to prevent this. million have been ploughed into leuchars to allow 6 sqn to arrive and operate. This is a cost that will far outweigh any cost of moving the the GR Sqns south.

The goverment seem to do everything arse about face mate.its not a good thing to say,but i think that leuchars is the one to go.16 percent of jobs in scotland lost due to kinloss and lossiemouth.thats a lot of jobs.fifes a much more prepared and financially stable area than inverness.i dont want to see leuchars go but seems like thats more the likely one in my eyes.no base is safe these days

What's Inverness got to do with it ? If they shut Lossiemouth then Elgin City and Lossiemouth town will be hit in a very, very big way - Forres is a large town next to Kinloss and is already devastated with the news.
Inverness is about 30 miles from Kinloss and Lossiemouth is over 40 miles away.

Where do you get the "16% of jobs lost in Scotland" from ?

Save Lossie AND Leuchars.

The 16 per cent quotation relates to the amount of jobs in the Moray and Nairn area that would be directly affected if both bases were to close. Indirectly I would put that figure closer to 75%. Although Inverness at first glance may not be directly affected, it too would face a serious knock on effect as alot of Service personal from Kinloss have set up home in the City and if you take into consideration the 140+ million pounds a year loss (just from the actual service personel) how much of that is spent in Inverness with it being the main shopping centre in the North?

Why is there absolute certainty, among forum posters, that either Lossiemouth or Leuchars must close? I was speaking to my Nephew recently, who is stationed at Lossiemouth. There is no specific concentration on these two bases anymore than any other bases. The net has been flung far further and wide than people seem to imagine, and nobody actually has a clue whicjh two R.A.F. Stations will eventually get the chop. The palava over the bases in Scotland seems increasingly like a local press engineered paranoid reaction. The result is for the last month or two, far too many posters on avaition forums have been working very hard at making the case for closing Leuchars in particular. Always with the usual preamble "Well I hate to say it, but...etc etc). :@

It was a story by Scotsman reporter David Maddox which started this story, although wether it appeared in any other paper is anyone's guess. But that's where I first saw it. Also I suspect because of other stories I've seen it's due to the Scotland/ England who want's what based here or there which is the true reason behind it.

also, NOWHERE have the government mentioned closure. The plans is to move the GR4 out of lossie, not close it. Yes that will mean job losses and less people in the area, but the camp will NOT close. it will simply mark time, and start the prep work for JSF. There will still be people stationed there, just not as many. :thumb:
