XV(R) Disbandment Date

Post by vulcanxl425 » Fri Jan 13, 2017 5:44 pm

The Tornado Squadron at Lossie will disband as we suspected on 31 March . Speaking to IHS Jane's Wing Commander Paul Froome boss of XV said that the last long (9 month) course no. 74 will finish in February. A final refresher course started this month. The Tornado is due to continue in service till 2019 .

Cheers Al. 31st March - wonder if they will still be here then or bolted to Marham. I suppose there's some consolation in that they have a couple of years yet!

31st March is a Friday and comes toward end of first week of Joint Warrior 171.
Let's hope for a special ceremony and display as I feel they deserve that wheras 202 Sea King end at Lossie was sad and unable to be marked by local community.

HI Onemac, what do you mean when you say "bolted to Marham" - is there a plan to ship the jets out to Marham prior to sqn disbandment? Or some other reason why they may not be at Lossie?

Reason I ask is I'm considering booking on the Sleeper train to Inverness to be there Wed-Fri that week, partly for JW but also in the hope I'd see some kind of disbandment flypast(s) from XV.

Thanks in advance

The aircraft are due to go to Marham and be absorbed into the squadrons there. I believe there will be training and re-classification carried out using the XV Sqn crews that will be posted. When they go to Marham is unclear but the official statement gives the end of March for disbandment. If I hear anything further I will let you (and FC) know.

Al, In the meantime can we continue to speculate and throw in unqualified moans about the F-35B?

Most certainly young man. Do you want rumour, what I think I heard or downright speculation?
There's a rumour that a detachment will be hosted at Lossie twice a year at times outside of JW.

I heard somebody mention that the F-35B was going to be cancelled but that the UK would sub-contract modifications of the A version from Italy. This would of course quadruple the cost and result in the most poorly engineered and constructed aircraft since I built my last Airfix kit - but that's just my best guess!

I speculate that P-8 will be hosted at Kinloss and 617 Sqn will return to Lossie with the F-35B. Not in my lifetime of course but this would cancel my rumour above so I would have to change it to first F-35B through the Loop will be on the 22nd July, 2023.

Parking at 23 will improve........

I'll go with 'what you think you heard' as that's always an exciting blend of both rumour and speculation. Ok I'm off back to the Leuchars board to find out when those USN F-18s are arriving as I've been on this beach for months now.

I think I heard something taking off at 07:55L this morning and it wasn't a XV Sqn Tornado.

Now Al you need to get back on that medication as you are definatly entering the relms of fantasy with the Kinloss idea.

Another delay?
Poor lad will starve before these F18s turn up. Hope he's got a decent fishing rod ;)

Any credibility you had has been lost with that prediction. You could build a car park to put Asda to shame and you would still get some plonker blocking everyone in or out.

Perhaps it will reform as a front line F-35 unit?
