Did spot a Typhoon on finals to Aberdeen just before lunch though, was too busy trying to avoid crashing the car to see properly, looked like a 2 seat was about all I could manage!
Also seen the Typhoon above Aberdeen. Any idea why he'd be heading there?

Not sure but I thought I heard one the other day as well. I remember the Tonkas used to land there, quick turn around and off again about once a week. Perhaps someone can enlighten us both?

I don't see any mention of the Turks actually arriving, nor what would appear to be WGAF A400M 54+02 (with strange hexcode).

Try looking out for Lossie logs then I'm sure the guys who make
the effort to produce them will answer your question eventually :pop:

The Robert E Peary is presently moored in Loch Striven. A Danish frigate is at Faslane (F362) with a Spanish one (F101). A German supply ship is anchored at The Tail of the Bank (A516). All are Helo capable.

Hi guys, with regard to the Typhoon at Aberdeen, I live not that far from Edinburgh Airport and used to see all the usual suspects Phantoms, Tornado F.3s and GR.1/4s, the occasional Nimrod, Buccaneers, Jaguars and Typhoons plus a few other RAF Aircraft and 1 USAF F-111E all do missed approaches or Low Approach and Go Arounds as the controller refered to it as. So it is obviously a Low Approach and Go Around this chap was doing when you spotted it.

Many thanks. Makes sense as after I lost sight of him behind buildings a few seconds later I heard an almighty roar. Must've done exactly as you suggest.

RAF aircraft doing low/missed approaches at Aberdeen Airport have been a fairly regular sight and sound for many years, usually (but not exclusively) involving types based at Lossiemouth, Kinloss and Leuchars. When I was a kid in school in Aberdeen city, I remember two occasions when Vulcans made practice approaches from the north to Runway 16 and then poured on the power – you can imagine the noise they made – and climbed out over part of the city itself before banking to port (east) and heading out over the sea.

In more recent times, Nimrods were the most likely type to be seen on approach simply because a lot of their day-to-day work took them on patrols over the oil rigs not that far out to sea. I have clear memories of watching them circling to the south-east of Aberdeen, just out over the sea, waiting for a suitable break in the civilian traffic before starting their approach. My experience of watching them on ‘finals’ was that they would come down to approx. 100ft (maybe less) above the runway threshold, then pour on the power and start a gradual climb, then bank to starboard (east) and head out over the sea again before turning north and heading back to Kinloss.

As civilian traffic has increased at the airport, so the frequency of RAF approaches has decreased; it’s no surprise that the Typhoon this last Thursday came in late morning, when there is a bit of a lull in traffic. Likewise the RAF Hercules that made a couple of practice approaches a week ago (Saturday) in the early afternoon, the airport being notably quieter at weekends. The largest RAF aircraft I’ve seen making a low approach here was the Globemaster III with the commemorative tail artwork; now that was a sight, and unusual enough to warrant a paragraph in the local newspaper. I’ve never seen a Tornado or Typhoon do a ‘touch and go’ or actually land here, but they make their presence known with one hell of a crackling roar when the power goes on and they climb away – quite a contrast to the relative quiet of J41s, CRJs and Saab 340s/2000s!

Seen a few Typhoons from Leuchars(at the time) doing PDA's at Dyce(Aberdeen) while I was working in Kirkhill Ind Estate. There has also been at least one occasion when a C-17 has landed at the airport . Mil flights doing PDA's at civilian airport across the country is a very common occurrence.

If you want to discuss aircraft doing PD's at other airfields or what aircraft you have seen at what civil airports, can we please move it to a thread in the mess rather than on the Joint Warrior arrivals thread... Just a thought!

We get PD's at Lossie as well and it involved a Lossie aircraft so I think it's pertinent - my thoughts.

Al,

I think Chris's point is whether such postings are pertinent to JW 16-1 Arrivals (the thread title). I'm afraid that I would have to agree with him - but that's my own thought and not intended as any slur on the contributors. :)

All the best and keep up the good work,

Bob

Thanks for the clarification Bob - each to their own I suppose :)

Anyway, I look forward to contributing to this and other JW threads starting with arrival pics which I shall post in the relevant section ;)

Oops, I only mentioned it as a footnote on a JW related post, didn't mean to upset the applecart!

On a purely JW related topic does anyone know if the KC-135 is likely to return during the exercise or just once its finished (heard it left yesterday)?

Cheers
