23 End Earthworks & Mounds

Post by Bluetail » Thu Feb 27, 2020 6:41 pm

I was driving past today and noticed some extensive earthworks being undertaken outside the fence at the 23 End. There is now a barrier across the access to the 23 End track from the western end, most of the Whins have been removed and at least two large mounds have been built. Anyone any idea's whats going on. The eastern end which leads to the crash gate is currently unaffected.
I do what the voices in my head tell me to do!!!!

Took a walk over today, they have totally flattened the ground from the 23 track end (silver sands caravan site end) all the way back to the green on the golf course. They are building 2 mounds next to the green but the digger driver wasnt too sure of there purpose, they have replaced the memorial plaque (Bill's Hill) on top of one of the mounds, They are also putting a Swan neck shaped track off of the main road, approx 25 yards back from the entrance to the road up to the new triple P8 hangar, to the crash gate that used to be on the 23 track, effectively it appears at this time that they have removed vehicle access to the 23 end of the runway. Will keep an eye on any developments over the rest of the year until they finish the runway upgrades in the hope that an alternative access is put in place.

I believe they are building a temporary lorry park. As to why it is outside the base I have no idea. The mounds are the removed top soil which is the property of the golf club.

I am led to believe that there is going to be a parking area also an entrance to crash gate 9 for materials to get on to site and the info came from V/F contract worker taking up the levels etc Cheers Bill R

Guys

Reading through this thread and especially Coull62 remarks
especially the remarks concerning the flattening of the 23
path
Unfortunately this sounds like they maybe thinking of erecting
another of the big razor topped fences as far back as they can,
but not encroaching onto the golf course ,the thinking behind this
Is they want to move the threshold clearance to cater for the P8's , hope not !! 😪

What exactly has been done? I read Coull’s post as the area from the start of the dirt track off the main road to the first green you pass on your left has been levelled off( Red area on map). However reading Mark’s post above, have they levelled the ground through the undershoot to the green behind the pillbox(Green area on map)? Would make sense to remove the hill that leads up to the wooden fence within the undershoot area.

Both areas the land belongs to Moray Golf Club, so will interesting to see if the MoD are indeed pushing out the perimeter fence line.

Sounds and looks more like a new access to crash gate 9. The area flattened is the red area in Scott's pic, or certainly the mound of earth that was opposite the BFI has been flattened, with the bushes etc between that and the Covesea road taken out in the process.

Wonder if they’re planning in putting in a second guardroom/access gate to accommodate the extra personnel for the P-8 facility. They used to use CG9 for base access/exit during peak times to take the pressure off the main gate. On a side note, is there any additional explosive storage facilities being built for the P-8 along with a taxi through aircraft wash (birdbath)?

Hi Folks I have just been round past the 23 end this morning and the hard core has been spread round the area and the line of the new entrance has is filled with hardcore stopping just short of the B9040 road so as the time comes to join it up it only leaves a few hours work, also it looks like a second concrete batching plant is going on site as several artic lorries with siloes etc being unloaded by big mobile crane
