Going back a few years ago the Super Etendards at Leuchars used to do a Saturday morning JMC mission maybe its a similiar thing ?

Tony

The Gripens are at Lossie until Friday 15th October, not sure what made you think that they were only here for the weekend?
varisian wrote:Heard today that all of the Gripens are moving to Kinloss on Friday, including ground crew etc and returning to Lossie next Monday, as Lossie is closed over the weekend.
Can't see that happening, although stranger things have. As GMC said about Leuchars, the same used to happen at Lossie for the JMC's(JW predecessor)of yesteryear, you used to get 2 waves on a Saturday and 1 on a Sunday. If the exercise dictates weekend flying then I would imagine Lossie will have to open regardless. If there was an issue that they couldn't then I would've expected all a/c to be based at Kinloss as space isn't an issue over there at the moment.

My source is reliable in that he works on the base at Kinloss and is involved in the exercise. Reasoning I was given is that it is just too expensive to keep Lossie open over the weekend.

Are these definitely extra airframes and not the ones that were already here returning from a early morning sortie?

I'm not sure but I don't recall hearing them going out this morning, although obviously they could have gone out before I woke up but this would be unusual - we don't usually have anything take off until about 08:30, generally a bit later on a Monday.

Anyway some more Gripens have just arrived, I saw four so add this to the others and you definitely have more than just the first four :thumb: The hard bit for me living here is that we hear jets all day long and you cease to 'hear' them any more so tend not to pay much attention. I only happened to see the most recent lot of Gripens arrive as I was walking into the lounge. I know, it's a hard life

Excellent  Surely with that amount of a/c away from home we should see some support flights over the next 2 weeks.

I notice that the ships with the helos on are due in Faslane or Glasgow, I will be making a trip up from Manchester this week for the Grippens and the Kinloss stuff and wondered if anyone can advise if you can see into Faslane of Glasgow if the boats are there ???

On a more off topic front....we will be staying at the Ceilidh Bed and Breakfast in Lossie, first time i have ever been up that neck of the woods so can anyone advise if there is a boozer nearby or indeed do they fly at night (locals also) from Lossie of Leuchars ??

Cheers for any help.

Rob,
Good news and bad news!

Bad news-the ships have gone, sailed from Faslane and KGV earlier today.

Good news-Ceilidh B & B, is a good choice, guy is ex-RAF, some very nice pictures on the walls-you'll enjoy those I think.

Also , it is within yards of The Clifton Bar, on Lossie seafront-nice pint of Deuchars, and, some very nice pictures/squadron shields etc., on the walls-look for the first and last Bucc at Lossie one!!

(Also the Skerry-Brae, overlooking the golf course on finals for the base-more pictures and good beer!)

Hi Rob,

It's very unusual for the JW fast jets to fly at night, normally they do a morning then an afternoon sortie with the last landings between 1630 and 1700, however it's not to say that they won't. The MARPAT a/c at Kinloss conduct 24hrs operations during the course of the exercise but since they go up for up to 4-11 hours at a time it's hit or miss in catching them. The locals are more than likely to be nightflying from 1900 until last recovery 2330 at the very latest.

I'll be up later on today, probably after lunchtime, and staying until the last landings.

I'll be in my black Audi A3, which I need to give a quick wash before I go anywhere!

I've got all next week off so I'll be up as much as I can :)

Joint Warrior 102

Post by Jonay » Tue Oct 05, 2010 6:00 pm

I'm just home after an alright day! I spent the early afternoon on my own down at 05 and caught the Tonkas arriving and doing circuits. I then met up with a friend who is one of Lossiemouth's SAC Controllers who took me round to 23 by the golf course, where I got the 2xGripens and then the 4xGripens.

We were hoping for a Tonka to do a low approach right over us but one of the Hawks got in it's way I was robbed of the experience! I needed to head home and ad I was driving through Lossiemouth I saw the P-3 on approach to Kinloss.

I'll post pics later on, I need to attend a meeting!
