Linton final graduation

Post by time on target » Tue Jul 02, 2019 7:51 am

As the final graduation for Linton is approaching does anybody know if there is going to be any special events to mark this sad event. When is the final graduation day?

The final Graduation Day at Linton will be for 274 BFJT Course on the 25 October .

There are two planned Linton farewell events , a formal dining in night in the Officers Mess on Friday 9 August and a Tucano End Of Service hangar party on Saturday 28 September . No other details for these as yet but look out for NOTAM's for any associated displays or flypasts . The Linton Families Day is Friday 26 July , 13:00 - 17:00 and which usually has a limited flying programme .

Thanks for the above info DT.

Anyone heard any rumours for the future of RAF LOO. Whilst York is pretty close it's not in a great spot for commuting to Leeds or Harrogate where most people commute
to round here (small toll bridge over the Ouse at Aldwark for that direction) so I'm not sure it will go to housing development, similar issues for Warehousing/Trading estate and there's loads of those nearby.

As far as a future for civil flying there's already business jets landing in the evening (Cessna 560 Xl Citation Excel landed Friday eve then returned to Luton Sat eve) but can't see a future for that and looking at Church Fenton that doesn't seem to have taken off as a business jet venture. Teesside up the A19 doesn't seem that popular and has few flights. Thinking this might go back to farmland?

Pretty hacked off it's going to be honest as I'm only 2.5 miles to the SW, was hoping the Red Arrows would move there or even the USAF would pick it up. Been working from home a lot recently and just this Monday (15/07/19) a Typhoon did a pass at lunchtime, then 2 more in formation in the afternoon, shortly after an F35 did a few wheels down approaches and went roaring off. Also going to miss the Tucanos especially the night flying. Not to mention the loss of jobs for the area.

Will have to move up the A1 closer to Leeming!

Off at a tangent a bit, but do/did the courses at Linton include night flying? Reason I ask is I heard a swarm of wasps over the house last night at about 10pm, and PP showed it was a Tucano, ZF515 (I think) Callsign LOP05 heading south west over Yeovil at low level then over Lyme Bay towards Exeter. It was on an Exeter Squawk but appeared to carry straight on past Exeter towards Plymouth. Can't say I've ever noticed Tucanos night flying down here before.

No night flying at LOO this week, think their display team is out and about at the moment and they were at Yeovilton on the weekend so might still be in the area. Others may know more, also they have a twitter account.

Another F35 did a couple of flyovers just now, looks impressive to me. Hope there's more to come before it shuts, use it before you lose it people.

Blackcat1 they're being retired and the new Texan is going to be flown out of RAF Valley - apparently the Texans are already there and not liking the sea air too much!

I've been told that the reason they resurrected the Tucano display flight this year was that they had been saving the hours on the Tucano airframes to get them to the end of 2019 but can now pretty much use them up.

Sad to see the RAF leave - we quite like having them buzzing around (with the occasional roar too!)

Without going into to much detail, it's a Safety Equipment issue which will be resolved once the necessary approvals are obtained from the MAA.

Leeds East should begin in earnest soon - CAA approval for GNSS is still in the consultation phase and is rumoured to be online sometime around next spring. They've a huge FBO building which is now externally complete and awaiting fit-out. As to whether it will be a success or not, it's too early to tell (although to say they have their detractors is an understatement), but don't write it off before it has even been launched. They currently have a resident PC12, Challenger, Conquest, a handful of GA types, regularly flown Gazelle, A109 and Delfin, and provide frequent temp hangarage to a couple of Citations etc etc

With a long service career coming to an end I hope that the Tucano can be celebrated. I dont suppose there are any public events being planned ? Out of interest how many Tucano remain at Linton ?

I understand that extra car parking is being made available air-side of the Linton viewing area and that temporary fencing has been put in place but locals may be able to advise more ?

A message regards car parking/standing/loitering under the runway approach has been posted on the LOO Spotters Group and appears on their Twitter feed of which I am not a member but hopefully this link will work ? Hopefully ! ;

Well this was the day the RAF retired it's Tucano fleet and the four final Tucano students of 274 BFJT course were awarded their wings by ACM Mike Wigston CAS .
Quite a bit about the day has appeared on social media and also featured on BBC Look North from Leeds again and is available to view on the BBC iPlayer from 09:20 ;

So the Tucano has left RAF service. But where have the remaining aircraft gone ?
Seen a photo of a nine ship formation, assume the last airworthy have gone to Shawbury storage pending resale ?
But seen no details.
