For anyone thinking of going down , the 03 end is close to the enthusiasts area just outside of Linton village .

Hi,

It was apparently engine failure resulting in a wheels up landing, which looks about right judging by the skid marks on the grass.

The crew did a good job in landing it and walked away unhurt. :)

I managed some pics which I'll post later before the MOD police turned up.

The viewing area is now closed and there are guards on the fences near the crash site.

Andy,

Just seen a report of the incident on the York Press website. Did they use your photo? There's one on there that looks like it.

Link to York Press website here ;

It looks to be a slightly different angle from Andy's shot judging by the background ?

Could well be David. If photographers are restricted to one particular area to get their shots from I expect they're all going to end up fairly similar.

Hi,

Not one of mine as I've had a quick look, could be an official one as there was someone taking photos on base.

I was told today that it was an engine failure on take off and the pilot put it down before the u/c had time to lock down again .
Female instructor and pupil .
Considering the circumstances I think she did well to get it down within the airfield boundary and in one piece .
Well done to her !

gingerterry wrote:Hi Andy, why do you think it was an engine failure? judging by the damage to the tips it would appear that it was turning when it hit, but if there was any kind of engine failure they would have feathered the prop which would not have given the resultant damage. Also mate, you know as well as i do that they would have used the emergency accumulator to blow the legs down. lord knows weve both rigged enough tuc undercarriages to know how they work. my bet is on one of the hydraulic UC rams shearing so they only got two greens indicated, then retracted the other two to land on its belly. what do you think mate?.

Terry

Now then,

I was just going on what was seen and heard.

The aircraft took off, lost power and they managed to get it back on the airfield, 'landing' before the intersection and skidding all the way to where to photos show it. Maybe feathering the prop would have made it worse and I'm not sure on why they didn't try the u/c, maybe time and altitude was against them.

I got there just after it happen so didn't see it, but I did hear It!

Remember the incident with 293, or had you moved on to Vickers or Fenton? They landed that on two wheels with us all stood there watching after burning off fuel, so I think this crew may have tried the same thing.

Anyway, all's well that ends well and the crew did a great job of getting it down especially as the circuit took them over trees of the old dump.

Cheers
Andy

She was on an air test apparently, the EEC being selected to manual as part of it at around 1500ft, as soon as it was selected to manual the engine flamed out. Unsure as to why the prop wasn't feathered or as to why the gear wasn't lowered.

It seems that Tucanos were grounded after this incident. I've seen no reports of the type flying this month, so are they still grounded?

They are grounded until the cause is found and rectified.

Still no known reason for the engine failure . Talks are on-going with Garrett and visits have been made to their factory in the 'States .

Hi All,
As a non-technical newbie, and certainly without the insider knowlege of, say, smiler16, just thought I'd chip in with information from our window cleaner (who normally knows everything happening in the world, ever) :) .

He 'heard' that the crew had been unable to lower the undercarriage and were making low passes to enable those on the ground to get a look, and on the last (which may possibly have also been the first) of these the engine failed, hence the wheels-up landing.

Hope this doesn't sound too simplistic.

best,
graham
Doesn't sound simplistic at all Graham. I'm pretty sure this wasn't the case however.
