seems odd that they have moved such a short distance to carry out an exercise? Could they be simulating being based there, there was rumour that some early Typhoons were looking for a home last year. I'm sure our more well informed contributors can shed some light on this, hopefully without the mocking scorn given to a post last year.
This exercise has nothing to do with potentially basing Typhoons at Leeming (as great as that would be), neither the building works at Lossie. It’s an exercise testing all the elements required to operate away from home station.

Thanks for clarification of the purpose of the exercise. I thought, as I was informed that the hard shelters were being used (and these are not available in many locations) that the airfield was being tested, rather than the mobility of the squadron. I also thought that the hard shelters were full of bits of Tornado from the RTP programme. One observation I have regarding the RTP programme is regarding my hobby as a teenager. Back in the 60s motorcycles were the choice of those not being able to afford cars, and those wanting transport before their 17th birthday, the lifelong love of the mode of transport usually developed once the exhilaration had been experienced. Way back then scrap yards were a good source of spares - joking in Hartlepool we used to say that Pout & Fosters were the main agent for our particular machines (the company being a scrap merchant. They dealt in half crowns, eg one half crown, two half crowns, tree half crowns. For the sum of 3 half crowns, when I was 14 I bought a couple of bantam (BSA 125cc) engines and a few other bits, enough to build a working engine on the bench in my dad's shed. As time went on I managed to get decent bikes, but I had other bikes built mainly from bits and pieces obtained from friends and the scrap yards. Experience taught me that what was worn out on one bike/ frame/ wheels/engine, would also be the Achilles heel one the same part of another one. For examples piston rings and cylinder bore/ valve springs/ clutch plates/ etc on an engine/ rear dampers/ foot rest rubbers bearings and seals on the frame and folks/ chains/ tyres and brake linings (well before pads existed) on the wheels, I could go on.
Relating my experience to the RTP programme I would expect that the all Tornados would suffer the same wear to critical parts, so the banks of usable spares would be limited to bits that didn't wear out anyway, again I'm sure proper experts can put me right on this.

Apogolies kind sir. To put it in more simple terms. Things that wear(or fatique) out on one aircraft of a particular type, will be the same things that wear out (or fatique) on another aircraft of the same type. Not forgetting things like gaskets and seals have a once only use. I was comparing my experience with motorbikes with that, that the RTP programme might have (other than the fact that we will have none of the aircraft type in service soon).

I had a shed full of motorbike spares (from bike's I'd scrapped/ mates bikes/ and that were picked up from scrap yards) from that never I never needed, but when something needed replacing it was always something that had been too badly worn on another machine, to be re-used. An example othings that was never needed were the ever reliable AMC gear boxes, used by Norton, Matchless and AJS. Examples of things not reusable are clutch plates (in many cases), tyres, piston rings and brake lining. I hope you can relate to that. Admittedly I did subject the page to ramblings of an old man but, at my age, it helps to pass the time and this page in notably short of the written word.

I know this is "old" info but time spent at Leeming Monday 4th. & Tuesday 5th. provided the following sightings....

Monday
ZK323 being pushed back into a HAS after 14:30
ZK380 arrived 15:44 & put into HAS
Nothing else happened before dark.

Tuesday
4 Typhoons launched at approx 08:10
ZK380 landed 10:00
ZK310, ZK332 & ZK323 landed in that order at 10:35 after a run & break.

I called it a day & headed south.
