Altcar 2021

Post by chrisward123 » Mon Jul 19, 2021 3:56 pm

Altcar Training Camp will host an military aviation exercise from Saturday 17th July until Friday 23rd July 2021. Up to 10 helicopters will operate daily until around 0330 hours.

In order to meet all training objectives the aircrew are required to achieve a number of night sorties; unfortunately during the summer months and the later hours of darkness, this necessity means flying through to the early hours of the morning. Aircraft routing in and out of Altcar Camp has been planned to minimise disruption as far as possible and the continued support of the Hightown and Formby community is very much appreciated during this essential training.

Not much help but two chinooks via low level corridor and then West to Altcar as LIFTER01/02 about half an hour before the two Wildcats.
Wildcats split with RASCAL01 ZZ531 going through Liverpool Zone and RASCAL02 continuing up the low level corridor and then West. RASCAL01 stayed in a low hold away from Speke for a while then went along the Mersey and up the coast and then both met up up to land in their usual spot at Altcar.
On Saturday evening two merlins routed down from Prestwick and may have gone to Altcar but I was travelling and didn't hear their intentions...perhaps someone more loal can confirm where they went (or if back to Scotland)

The 2 Merlins cruised slowly along Crosby beach at low level giving the extremely busy beach some great entertainment. Think its fairly safe to assume they landed at Altcar with the speed (or lack there of) they were going..

A visit early this am yielded the following..although the dense undergrowth make clear views from outside v.difficult....

3 x Chinook HC6 ZK550, ZK551, ZK556 all 7 Sqn

1x Merlin HC4 ZJ123/G 846 NAS
(no other Merlins noted but clearly at least 1 possibly 2 more...3 is usual
number for this exercise)

2x Wildcat HMA2 ZZ517, ZZ531 both 815 NAS

I notice Merlin HC4 ZJ131/P on adsb this afternoon, showing a "normal" Jungly callsign [JNGLY50 hexcode 43C226].

2x Wildcat HMA2s (Rascal Formation) - ZZ513 & ZZ517
2/3 x Merlins (Connect Formation) - 1 confirmed as ZJ131

We read the Wildcats yesterday as ZZ517 and ZZ531 (NOT ZZ513)

Is everything parked deep in the trees this time? I've seen Wildcats near the main gate before and even Chinooks and Sea Kings on the sport field several years ago!

There are some very limited views of some of the parked helicopters through thick treelines. You can vaguely tell the aircraft type, but no real detail & not read any codes or serials.

My suggestion would be a need to be patient & wait for them to fly & view from public footpaths in the area. I understand the first missons to be typically departing early to mid afternoon with either 2 or 3 sortes each day running into the night & early hours.
Cheers, Stephen

Friday 23/07 11.00 adsb shows

Wildcat Rascal 01 ZZ531 between Worcester and Hereford heading back to Yeovilton

Merlin ZJ123 Commando 22 over Street Somerset also heading towards Yeovilton

both of these likely to be multiple aircraft formations with just the lead a/c showing
