According to ADSB one of the Chinooks is ZK561, also currently heading Northwest out to sea.

All

just noted heading out to sea from Altcar at 14:50 a loose formation of 2 Wildcats, a Chinook and 2 Merlins. Serials would be very welcome as I noted them from Lytham St.Annes

ZK554, ZK560, ZK561
COMMANDO flight of three merlins
ZJ123, ZJ124, ZJ135
TIGER 65 singleton merlin

Of yesterdays arrivals ZJ123, ZJ135, ZK560 and ZK561 noted in the air but others could have been as well

Hi Dervish, are they all visible by walking up the path alongside the railway ?
thanks Martin

Looking forward to the rant from some obnoxious "jobs worth" inside the camp regarding taking images from the public right of way next to railwayline outside the camp...because its a SF Ex...SBS allegedly...

All

I can now answer my own question. If you walk up the path by the railway you come to the 2 Wildcats. It is then quite a long walk until you get to the Merlins. We were only able to see the 3 grey ones, one which took off, there is probably one spot where you may be able to see all 3, otherwise its a case of moving up and down to convince yourself that you have seen 3, they are all parked tail on. It then another long walk until you get to the Chinooks, they are a long way away tucked in by the trees. We found one spot where we could see two and a half. If all 3 are not there then I think you will struggle to read them because of the distance and the hedge and trees that are close to the path.

Thanks, I’m heading down tonight. When I went last year the two wildcats were visible from the cycle path but through some trees. Walking further along there was a field where the Chinooks were and then the merlins even further round. From your post it seems the merlins and Chinooks have switched locations this year.

I think the wokkas are probably where they were in March 2017. Last year there were only 2 used in the exercise, if I recall, and they were conveniently using a sportsfield easily visible from the cycle path just further on from the wildcats as mentioned in previous post. Regarding the merlins presume the 3 grey ones referred to are obviously the HM2 plus 2 out of the 3 ex RAF Merlins which have gone through HC4 conversion (ZJ123 & ZJ124), the other a HC3i (interim) still in old RAF green scheme.

Campbell, the Merlins are where they were last year. The Chinooks are even further up the path, if its dark when you get there you may struggle with them
