WEATHER PERMITTING: An 8 ship formation practice flight from 1(F) Sqn will take place on 30th November and an 8 ship from 800 NAS will be flown on 1st December. 2nd December is the reserve day if weather prevents flying on either day. A 16 ship practice flight wi...ll be flown on 6th December with the 8th December as aweather reserve day.

The Day: The event to be held on the 15th December between 11:00 and 17:30 (all times local). Weather back ups are 14th and 16th December with a decision being made on 13th December. The flypast is aimed to start at 13:30 but may move dependent on the weather. The flypast will be with 16 Harriers in diamond formation at 1000ft. The formation will take off from RAF Cottesmore and will route through Wyton, Wittering, Cranwell, Waddington, Scampton, Coningsby and then back to Cottesmore at 15:00 (assuming the formation starts at 13:30 as planned.

Hope it helps.

Matty.

What are the chances of Cottesmore being open on Monday and Tuesday of next week? Got those two days planned for a trip and this weather is threatening to scupper my last chance to see them at the moment.

That will be a pity as Monday's forecast at present is stonking.

There are still no plans to snow clear, but they're hopeful of an end to the snow after tomorrow night/Saturday morning and are expecting to see some positive temps over the backend of the weekend. Prospects for recommencing flying early next week are pretty grim but they're not ruling anything out at this stage.

Thanks for the info.

What's the problem with clearing the snow? Surely they need to clear the runway to get up and rehearse the flypasts etc...? Time is running out.

Looks like I'll end up at Lakenheath instead at this rate. :grr:

There's no problem, except for the fact that Wittering and Cottesmore, along with quite a few stations, don't actually have snow clearence equipment. The days of the old snow blowers went years ago, cost cutting!!!

Correct the old blowers would have cleared the runways very quickly,
Why this country is in such chaos with a little snow, cost cutting will bite you in the arse sooner then later.

My understanding was that they do have some means of clearing, but there's only a finite supply of it (presumably deicing fluid type of stuff?).

Can't they just hover taxi a few harriers around for a bit, it'd soon melt away the ice

The Disposal Services Authority (DSA) would like to bring to your attention, the sale by Competitive Tender of this facsimile Harrier GR7 plus a Harrier GR1 nose section. They are available individually or as a pair. Both items have previously been used by the Royal Air Force Careers Organisation. Further tender documentation and clarifications will be available on the viewing day.'

Apparently the GR1 is a typo?

We had a De Haviland Ghost mounted on a specialy built trailer at RAF Boulmer in the mid 80's, that was just the Radar site.

Just heard there is going to be a practice flight on the 6th December, Can anyone tell what time it is going to be and where from please?
I would suggest that is subject to the snow melting over the weekend, surely?

Appreciate any updates though - will have to make a decision between Lakenheath or Cottesmore on Sunday night.

Is it not possible to just phone Cottesmore and ask or do they not give that sort of info over the phone?

Might be able to on Monday, but I'm making the trip from Essex. If I wait until they're answering the phones, it'll be too late to get there and see anything before the afternoon.

At the moment, the snow is melting away very nicely here and I suspect it will be clear by Monday if it keeps up this rate.

Here in St Ives, Cambs, about 45 miles south of Cott. it rained last night and as I type the fog has lifted, the sun is trying to shine and nearly all the snow has gone. It's like a heatwave outside compared to last week. Could be completely different further north though.
