Good news about the campsite parking, Hopefully the local police will be understanding of the numbers of pedestrians making their way to the 22 end of the runway. All folks want to do is pay their final respects to a fantastic aircraft :'(

Cheers

I also hope that the campsite owner actually knows how many cars he is going to get , trouble is is that if traffic volumes to the campsite pick up (queuing traffic) then the police may have to step in :S as it will be the ony parking area near the base.

Good morning,

Weather in Cottesmore area is -2C and bright sun, a little high cloud. Perfect for flying and going for a walk along public footpaths in rural Rutland.
For those enthusiasts of avaiation [and station personnel, of course], Wittering images, not brilliant but at least a record of sorts for history.

Image

A long way off at 1215hrs.

Approaching the airfield, 1229hrs.

ZG858, using all his time as darkness fell.

For the Ramblers in our group, I could recommend the Viking Way. It provides a wonderful panorama of Rutland, easily accessed from New Road [runs towards Thistleton via the Public footpath and will be very tranquil in a few weeks.

Timetable was posted earlier in the thread. Monday has normal ops in the morning with a sortie of all the special schemes (at least four) up in the afternoon for an A2A shoot.

Long range forecasts I've seen atm are predicting sleet/snow for next Wednesday. If that's still the case in a few days, it might be shifted ahead to Tuesday....?

Lets not forget your just an annoying visitor on the day to the locals and residents who live in and around the base.

The public footpaths will only be closed for safety reasons and people may find that once the lanes 'fill up' they may get closed off, by the local plod, not the raf plod who will be busy enough on the base itself.

Runway may be clear, but its the rest of the peritrack and hardstanding areas. I know the fish-heads were hard at work trying to clear areas yesterday.

Heard this morning that 4's move to Cottesmore may not happen today because of the conditions at Cottesmore.

Not sure, there was compacted snow and ice on the runways yesterday,
Reports saying some attemp being made was going on to clear some of the runway was mentioned, so if they do clear some of the runways the chances are they will just backtrack down the runway and will not be useing the taxiways.

We have had snow here this morning, so there is still some of the white stuff around.
i live pretty central and this snow as blown in from the east. we should get a bit of a thaw over the weekend, thou i understand the cold snap will be back again next week

Thanks Rich, great idea. I'm not sure if I can make it next week, but good to know those who can will have a place to park.

Headset 57 - "safety reasons." I can't see that happening. If the Police do move people on it'll be from a traffic obstruction viewpoint. If visitors can find an unobtrusive place to park, or get dropped off, then what safer place to view from than a public footpath?

Isn't it the crash gate that's along the north east stretch of the base that the aircraft taxi by when they're heading to the 22 threshold?

Anyone have any more information about this facility for 'registered' enthusiasts?
Correct, it's the crash gate right by the threshold of 22. Spoke to the Cottesmore CRO today and the "registered enthusiasts" are the aircraft mags and overseas visitors. She also informed me that farmers are being advised to set up barriers to prevent the expected 1200 visitors from, I presume, getting to the vantage points along the fence line. As we mere mortals have our spot at the camp site, we are being kept out of our normal spots to be fair to those coming from abroad. So those of us who actually paid for the Harrier out of our taxes can stand way at the back of the queue.

So the arrangements for the media and "registered enthusiasts" is they get to have the prime locations outside the fence, and everyone else will be kept away from those spots?
