Pleased to say my first book is now available to pre order from Mortons at the link below.

https://www.mortonsbooks.co.uk/book/sno ... waddington
The air base at Waddington has been home to the RAF’s most valuable surveillance, intelligence-gathering, communications and electronic warfare assets for more than three decades.

During the 1990s, Boeing E-3D Sentry AWACS and Hawker Siddeley Nimrod R1 signals intelligence platforms became familiar sights in the skies over Lincolnshire as ISTAR (Intelligence Surveillance Target Acquisition and Reconnaissance) assets were brought together at RAF Waddington.

The Raytheon Sentinel R1 followed and more recently the base has become home to the RAF fleet of Beechcraft Shadow R1s, Boeing RC-135W Rivet Joints and General Atomics MQ-9 Reapers – as well as the Red Arrows aerobatic team and units experimenting with future drone technology. Most recently, the base has received its first General Atomics Protector RG Mk 1s to take up the roles performed by the now 15-year-old Reaper fleet.

In Snooperbase Waddington, author and photographer Michael Hiley chronicle’s the history of the RAF’s ISTAR hub – including the aircraft flown, their known equipment and their operational use as far as the Official Secrets Act will allow.

So the pre-order of my book took me by surprise earlier this week, I've now had the time to put a little bit more info together.

The book is based on RAF Waddington, which is the RAFs ISTAR hub and houses some of the most secretive assets in the UK armed forces and the most well known - The Red Arrows.

The book starts in the Mid 80s' and ends in May of this year, covering all types based here in the period, many of the exercises such as NOMAD in the early 2000s and the infamous Tactical Fighter Meet 1986.

Also covered are some rather rare and interesting visitors - a Polish TU-154 and a weekend divert from a USAF TR-1 for example.

There are accounts from current and ex-military personnel, including a very detailed account from an Ex E-3D tactical director on the first mission of Operation Deliberate Force in 1995 over Bosnia.

It's available to pre-order now from the publisher and many good book sellers.

Cheers

Mike

Hi Mike
I am iterested in your new book.
The link takes you to Mortons books, the publisher, and a hard copy with 170 pages for £30
Amazon and others have a soft back for about £16 with 148 pages.
Both published 23rd August.
So my, hopefully not stupid, question is is there any difference in content or quality between the two.
Thanks
Chris

Hi Chris,

I was under the impression it was going to be hardback from the start, Amazon and various other places have it for around £16 as you say - I didn't notice they mentioned soft back so I have queried with the publisher.

It's still in the design phase, all the chapters and body of the book are complete, I'm just waiting for the final cover and spine design.

The original date they told me for publishing was November time, but I've seen two august dates so far, so don't have an exact time it'll appear.

The page count is going to be at least 248 - that was what was on the latest proof I've been sent.

Hope that helps

Thanks

Mike

Publisher has confirmed it's all hardback - so everywhere has the same version.

Just been to the Publisher's to collect a few copies and then signed 100 for the pre orders.

It's an excellent quality book - far better than I was expecting!

Hmm,

I wonder if Amazon have cocked up somewhere...

The RRP is £30 and they have it as £16.99 RRP....

I'll do some digging with the publisher this week and see if they can give me any details.
