car walk-arounds

Post by Discodaz » Thu Mar 09, 2023 7:08 am

not technically "cobra warrior" but observed while i was there .

why do base personnel, stop their cars, get out and walk round inspecting, get back in then repeat before driving away .

i was watching this happen time and time again yesterday.

is it to check for anything potentially lose to prevent FOD?

never seen it at any base before.

sorry if this is in the wrong section before anyone is quick to point it out ;)

Checking for loose items and FOD, happens at Lakenheath as well [plus probably almost every other base]

standard procudure for any airfield where you drive on taxiways or cross them. All part of the airfield driving permit course from ATC for RAF stations before SATCO signs you off, covers where to stop, check etc, Wittering used to have blue boxes on the roads to stop in when thay had the giant hoovers there with fod bins to put stones etc in them.

This reminds me of the time we had a base visit at Luke AFB, the coach we were on stopped, and our guide wanted 4 people to check the tyres, of course no one moved [thought it was a joke] until the guide said ok we will end the tour then, and 20 chaps tried to get through the door at once

IIRC Fairford Has 'cattle-grid' bars at the access point to aircraft manoeuvring areas. These distort the tyres sufficiently to hopefully dislodge stones & grit from the tread patterns, followed by a visual inspection of each tyre's whole circumference. ;)
Once when observing activities at Dunfield Crashgate a civilian 3-axle tipper-truck driver running on the southern taxiway failed to notice a half-brick jammed in between his rear double-wheels! I managed to attract his attention from outside the fence & indicate the location of said brick for removal. Advice gratefully received! :O

Trust me, it doesn't. My knees will attest to the lack of them after multiple FOD checks per day rejoining taxiways from the peri road and other non-sanitised areas...

No need to watch the whole three hours, the link I provided is a timestamp to the point in the video which shows the FOD checkpoint from a vehicle drivers view.

Cheers
