From RAF Waddington Facebook
During Dec 7-11, the #RedArrows will temporarily operate from RAF Waddington. The team’s jets will be based at the Lincolnshire station but will continue to practice at RAF Scampton. It will test how the Red Arrows can integrate into RAF Waddington, when it becomes their new home.

What is the point of moving the Reds to Waddington when we all know they have to continue to use the air space over Scampton for reasons of :- noise, air traffic safety, and the fact that the land around Scampton is already heavily polluted with diesel. If the raf vacate Scampton they will be hit by a mammoth clean up bill from the purchasers so they can develope it for housing. The sourounding land owners will then jump on the compensation bandwagon

Because it's costing too much to keep Scampton active.

Am I right in understanding that with the news that Waddingtons front line flying role is to be significantly reduced, the airspace will be moved to Waddington from Scampton? Therefore Scampton will be completely abandoned unlike the few years when the Reds moved over to Cranwell?

Not sure what sort of clean up operation is required at Scampton with regards diesel? I suspect the old weapons stores will stay and probably be used for storing commercial explosives like they are used for down the road in Faldingworth.

Thread drift perhaps, fully aware of the ‘Save Scampton’ campaign. Would be great to see Scampton retain its airfield status given the number of local GA airfields under threat, not sure it’s going to get much support in its current guise though. Having said that, if the runway could be used for hard core in making the A15 a dual carriageway I would throw support behind that!

Out of interest, what military flying units are to be left at Waddington? Reds obviously, Shadow? I know Protector is operated remotely from there, possibly the future of operations on the station.

R313 airspace will stay at Scampton, so the Reds will practise there. It'll mean crash rescue and ATC will have to stay, thereby not saving much money. The whole process of looking to move the R313 space has been a bit of a farce with the conclusion (again) that Scampton is the best place for them to be.

Is that still the case? I suppose initially but now that Waddingtons flying commitments are being scaled down I suspect the box will move over there eventually. Otherwise as you say another pointless move.

Just reading an old RAF Yearbook for some other research. It states in July 2008 "the Red Arrows will move from Scampton to nearby Waddington by July 2011. The team will continue to use the dedicated airspace above Scampton." Obviously no-one has dusted off the files from that previous attempt!

Have discussed offline and heard that the airspace will move with the team eventually as Scampton is to be sold off completely. Nothing upto date online but it was put to consultation last year so perhaps it’s still work in progress. I understand the airfield would still need to be usable as you say, if they were to use the airspace to practice.

I think with a draw down in front line commitments at Waddington it makes moving the box over too a slightly less complicated process.

Shame to see Scampton go, but it’s been hanging on for dear life for a few decades now. Hopefully progress will be made on preserving the site in some way.

I can't see r313 moving over Waddington, the areas to the west and north are too densely populated. Not sure on the outcome of the trials at Syerston and Donna so they may still be a possibility.

Considering how little the E-3s fly having both the Reds and possibly 16 MQ-9Bs based will see an uptick in movements.

I think you will find they are only controlled from Waddington, but actually operate elsewhere.

The 31 Sqn Protectors will be the first UAVs that are allowed to fly in/out UK Airspace.
