REDS move to Waddington, facts & rumours

Post by C24 » Thu Jun 11, 2020 9:20 am

Rumour has it that someone at Scampton has started a “ To do! “ list.

A future training site after the move is currently under testing.

They have been planned to visit Syerston and Donna Nook in recent weeks (Donna was yesterday) but scuppered due to weather both times.

They have yet to do a practice outside of 313 this year.

I don't think they have practiced at Donna before, but they have used Syterston .

Update on the local paper, potentially building something on the current Charlie dispersal and the ground run area between Charlie and Bravo for the Wedges.

Maybe the Red will operate from Alpha, or take over the Sentinel hangars when they leave?

The Sentinel hangar was mentioned when the move was circulated last year.

The Sentinel hangar would make sense, they could then utilize the parking the Sentinels use just south of where the RJs park.

Can't see them building a new ASP for them, but you never know.

The pages are mainly referring to the E7s, but do make a little reference towards the Reds.

If they are building a new complex for the E7s etc, what becomes of the alpha hangar when the E3D & Sentinels have gone?

It might be written Linton but it is pronounced locally Wittering

One issue that never gets mentioned when we speculate about the possible move of the Reds is "polution". " What do you mean" I hear you say ! Well the Arrows have spent many a year at Scampton flying the 313 block of air space. Consequently tons of diesel has been deposited on the surrounding land but due to the location, not many houses. The airfield and surrounding land will have to be cleaned up if it is to be used as house building land. Scampton and 313 is already polluted but the locals are used to the drifting smelly diesel. The posh houses around Wittering are not ! The nice expensive houses at Linton on Ouse are not ! They could move to Waddington but in order to continue to use 313 they woulh have to keep Scampton under RAF ownership. Which means no profitable sale for house building. Cottersmore would make the most sense I believe ! But the discussion goes on. At least it gives us anoraks something to speculate and natter about ! Put your cash on the Reds having yet another reprieve and stopping again at Scampton.
"A Rhubarb" is a sortie of opportunity !

I was stationed at Scampton 88-92 and can confirm first hand that the overhead displays 3/4/5 times daily, coated the cars in a layer of diesel - and, as for the wives complaining about clothes on the washing lines...
Maybe in the intervening 30yrs, the chemicals have become friendlier?

Dear rhubarb

With the exception of the officers' quarters there aren't any posh houses at Wittering, camp or village. There are about a dozen due south but they would be outside the smoke zone.

Just my view of course.

The issue with airspace for the Reds is they are not always (in Scamptons case) North West of the runway for their displays, especially when training over the winter months, they can practice anywhere in the circle of R313, the south side of it is almost touching the Cathedral. So any new location would have to be a similar layout, with a radius centered on the location. Looks like they will be doing PDA this week. Were up three times yesterday and once this morning, not sure when it will be.

Hi Mike! Pretty sure that they have Cranwell pencilled in for the 16th July! Could that be the PDA day??

Possibly, no NOTAM up for Cranwell as yet. Just going off what Red 1 put on his instagram feed on Monday evening.

I think for PDA they have to take in at least 2 different displays sites, seem to remember from the recent tv shows about them.
Weather looks poor for this week, next is much better, maybe a Scampton display in the morning and a Cranwell in the afternoon on the 16th? Have to keep an eye out.
