I was at Waddington on Monday to see the Nimrod flypast rehearsal, and was staggered by how bad the hedge has become, even since my last visit. For the life of me, I cannot comprehend the thinking of people who take a lot of effort to create a aircraft viewing area (an excellent initiative, in my view), and then proceed to plant a ten-foot high hedge, the sole purpose of which can only be to make viewing difficult! How crazy is that? I'm sure the authorities view the condition of the hedge as a useful ploy to deter people from standing on the verge of the A15, particularly during the air show period, so let's hope that, once the show is over, they'll do something about it. If they don't, nature will continue to take its course, the situation will get worse, and they might as well plough up the WAVE area and sell it to a local farmer.

I've always assumed the main motive of such perimeter fencing was to deter drivers from peering onto the airfield as they drove past, and thereby was a bid in improving road safety.

I never really considered it was a deliberate act to stop spotters viewing in general terms or prevent those unwilling to pay entry fee at annual airshows, either of these initiatives would surely be impractical anyway?

Either way, I agree it is a PITA.

I didn't mean to imply that the hedge is a malicious act by the folks at Waddington to make life harder for spotters and photographers! Or indeed to stop the crowds on the A15 during the air show, although there may be some who would regard this as a useful side benefit. More than anything, I'm puzzled and saddened that a base that set up such a brilliant initiative as the WAVE could also be responsible for that ridiculous hedge - the two don't really tie in. If it is a question of security, or preventing the distraction of drivers on the A15, surely a plain old wooden fence, as is present at many other bases, would suffice?

Perhaps when its all over and done with John can get the official line from Waddington and find out why they did not keep to there side of the agreement about cutting the hedge before the show.

John the point the base seem to miss is that if the hedge had been trimmed to 4 foot as agreed with you, nobody would have wanted to cut the hedge.

the people who I spoke too who were cutting it hadn't even heard of FC or the ukar. That surprised me a bit cause how did they know to bring tools?

not sure I believe the whole demonstration against the Reapers bit. will believe that when I see it. especially as they think it will be over on the A15??? surely they would demo down Manchester Road.

we're you summoned to the meeting or did you arrange it john?

I think there was a 'peace camp' at Waddington in the early 1980s.

There is a 'No Drones' week during the first week of October this year and there is talk of a Peace Camp at Waddo in August.
