silly question time...sorry..

What does "PD Manchester" and "PD Newcastle mean" ?
also what is a pairs PAR approach.

sorry dont get to airbases (apart from 4 days last week there) much so the jargen catches me out but I like these reports as they are not just serial numbers which agan mean nothing to me.

PD - practice diversion

PAR - precision approach radar, basically, the aircraft are 'talked' down by a controller either singly or as a pair.

Hope this helps. :pop:

Thank you.

Would this have been what they were doing last Thursday morning in the rain when the approaches were bringing them straight into the runway rather than what appears to be the standard fly over the control tower and circuit round.

Practice diversions...why would they go to civil airports rather than other bases ? or is it just a standard throw a dart at the map type thing encase things got really messy ?

Never got here, sadly - noted as "canx technical".

ILS (Instrument Landing System - big cone from the end of the runway that aircraft fly down) and PAR approaches are used in bad weather, especially when visibility is poor or this is heavy rain. Run and breaks (fly down the runway, break in to the visual circuit and land) and other visual approaches are not used.

Doesn't happen too often now, but Manchester always used to be a recovery airfield for fighters when bases in Lincolnshire and Yorkshire were unavailable. Over the past few years, a local council has blocked such flights from arriving, but I believe that is no longer that case...
