The Phantom and Me - an intriquing subject to talk about...

Post by Shippo » Mon May 16, 2016 7:50 pm

The Control Tower of former RAF Coleby Grange is the only building left standing and is derelict and neglected. It is not far from nearby RAF Waddington and a few miles from Metheringham Airfield. Many of these remote buildings are reputed to be haunted by airman and the Control Tower at Coleby Grange is suppose to be one of them. Visitors have claimed to have seen a phantom who is usually seen on the top floor gazing mournfully across the overgrown runway. Others also have said to have experienced the drone of long gone bombers. While other stories include a phantom who looks out of the window of the building, footsteps heard on the top corridor, and stones that have been thrown at people when looking in from the outside. People have felt head-pains near the stairwell area and voices have been heard. A number of people claim have heard bangs, and unusual noises. Is this living monument still alive with memories? Whether these occurrences are paranormal is an assumption, but then, have to be proven, phantoms or otherwise!

Squadron Leader (retired) Mike Pugh-Davies joined the Royal Air Force in 1976 after gaining a degree in Aeronautical Engineering at Loughborough University. He trained as a navigator and flew in Canberra, Phantom and Tornado aircraft and later became a NATO evaluator; not to mention flying in a number of other front-line aircraft.

He has served on operations in the Falkland Islands, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan and Qatar. He has filled a variety of staff appointments in both the RAF and NATO with his last job being an instructor in the Air Warfare Centre at RAF Cranwell.

Mike retired from the RAF as a squadron leader after 36 years of service. He gained a masters degree in Air Power Studies from the University of Birmingham in 2012 and has lectured on a range of aviation history subjects throughout the United Kingdom.

He will be reminiscing on one of his favourite aircraft by giving an illustrated talk on THE PHANTOM AND ME, not phenomenon that is likely to spook you out, but a solid object he once flew. Mike lives in Lincoln not far from the city centre where the Victorian Theatre Royal entertained Phantom and the Musicals. Regrettably their phantom came and went within one day and has not been seen since!

The lecture will be held in the WW2 gymnasium at the Metheringham Airfield Visitor Centre on Wednesday, 25th May, beginning at 7.30pm

Admission is £5.00 to visitors to include refreshments but is free to members of Friends of Metheringham Airfield and veterans of 106 Squadron.
