I was there on monday(25th)and they caught me by surprise as they were using the 01 runway and i was standing at the gap in the hedge on the chalk lane side of the base so they were some distance away taking off left to right, however once they landed it was still possible to get some good taxiing shots as they returned to their hangars,i am planning to go back today and find a new spot,on google maps it looks like white road could be good as slogen51 says.if point F is the gap i was talking about then they haven't closed it just put some new fence posts in so viewing is still possible .hope this helps.happy spotting.Mark.

Probably best to ask Closer to the time Chris as not sure what Runway will be active and after the SCUM Newspaper talking about the 5ft fence with a Loose Lip Spotter :grr: the other day just what will policing be like and fence situation.

It was evident at a certain ‘event’ recently held on base that the RAF abd civil police were miffed by the coverage. The photo was even included as part of the security briefing. The civil police officer giving the briefing did state that they had recommended to the RAF that a ‘spotters enclosure’ was built , citing the Lakenheath example. The thinking being that the majority of visitors on a normal day would in one place and easier to monitor. This can only be a good thing: ‘Face book’ spotters will have somewhere easy to view from and the serious photographer won’t have hassle because of others parking across field gates or trampling crops to get to the point that they have carefully walked field margins to get to.

Thanks. Which HAS site do the Tornados use?

Assuming they land on 01, would they use the taxiway past Point F (Thunder and Lightnings guide) before departure or after landing?

Also, any idea when the F-35s are going to start flying?

Point F is a problem as the Farmer does not like people being there ,You can Get them taxing from point D still down by the crash get .
the Tornados are in that HAS complex so yes if on 01 you would see them.Be aware the Heat haze down low this time of year pretty much rules out the ground shots on the runway anyway.

RWY 19 was used yesterday so expect same today.
Be cautious about taking photos at Point D - There are fence signs specifically forbidding photography in that area.
If they are flying pm (from about 1530) the heat shimmer is mostly gone and sun is in good position if you are west of 01/19.
For take offs - follow Chalk Lane north (under the 24 approach lights) and then take first road on left. Continue until you come to second layby on right (after trees). From there you can get decent departure shots with 200-300m lens.
For landings - return south down Chalk Lane, turn right at main road, then first left. Continue straight over at crossroads and after just over a mile take the first road on left. Park up in run-off area immediately on left. From here, excellent turn-in shots for RWY 19 approach.

No ideas about F-35s - only interested in Tornado !

Good luck

No - don't be cautious if there are signs - just don't do it! We are fortunate that in the UK we can pursue our hobby - in many other countries you can't. Deliberately ignoring signs etc is only going to increase the risk of further measures to stop our enjoyment.

Before yesterday I too hadn't driven down there for a long time but there were at least 2 such signs on the fence.
Turned round and back to road straightaway. If my original wording was not clear enough I apologise - I would NEVER advocate ignoring such notices.

Is the small junction okay where Swaffham Rd meets White Rd?
Google maps shows a decent sized parking area but its from 2009.Looks okay for 01 landing shots.
Would like to visit after Fairford.
