Well it's a new year and back to flying for the Tornado fleet. With the Typhoon expecting to be fully operational on several new types of weapons by January 1st 2018 this year may well see a lot more jets going to RTP as the drawdown of the fleet increases pace.

I had understood from reading official sources that Typhoon capability to fully replace Tornado was targeted for December 2018 and on that basis 2 Tornado sqds would disband during 2018 and the final sqd in early 2019. To increase the RTP rate in 2017 might therefore be considered as somewhat foolhardly so I hope you are incorrect Steven - but then it’s all run by the accountants who know the price of everything and the value of nothing. Typhoon might eventually bring excellent capability but the military strength of a nation also relies on capability in numbers, something with the demise of the Tornado we will not have. Perhaps someone in MoD Policy might eventually own up to the fact that RTP actually means “Retire Tornado Prematurely”
That’s my rant out of the way for 2017 – I promise no more.

David I think you might be right. I think the Typhoon capability is supposed to come online for January 1st 2019 to allow for Tornado retirement in March 2019.
